Lean In Circle Group for Women Conductors: Cycle 1

Given that the pandemic has made it even harder for women to reach their conducting goals, I have decided to start a Lean In group for women conductors. This group will meet once a month for three months via Facebook Group Video chat. The purpose of the group is to be able to voice and hear from others what their goals and challenges are regarding conducting, and will be asked to choose one action to execute for the next meeting. The dates and times for the meetings will be the first Monday of each month: April 5, May 3, and June 7 from 6-8pm EST. I do ask that you commit to attending all 3 meetings.

The structure is designed to accommodate 6-8 people to give adequate time for each participant to share their thoughts. If we get more interest/commitments than this, we can have someone else facilitate one of the groups. This is a peer led group. If we find the Circle Groups useful, we can plan further cycles to keep the encouragement and accountability going.

There is no fee for participating in a Lean In Circle Group, and having read the book Lean In by Cheryl Sandberg is not a requirement for joining the group.

If you would like to take part, please send me (Alicia Lieu) a private message on Facebook stating that you would like to participate in Cycle 1 of the Lean In Circle Group for women conductors and that you commit to attending all 3 sessions, and I will respond with a confirmation.

Feel free to tag anyone you think may be interested as well!

Take good care,

Alicia

We hope everyone is taking precautions and staying well during the pandemic. If you are taking time to focus on conducting during this time, we discovered that Lina Gonzalez-Granados and Kensho Watanabe are putting together the Conductors’ Collective. They are holding their first webinar on March 25, entitled “Anatomy of a Rehearsal.”

Follow on Instagram, email them at [email protected], or sign up for the webinar at: tinyurl.com/Web1Register

I (Alicia) hope to see you (virtually) there!

**Women Conductors- Save The Date: April 29, 2019**

At noon (Eastern Daylight Time) on April 29, NYCI will be hosting an online gathering of women conductors for the purpose of encouragement, empowerment, and networking. We will have a special guest giving a keynote on the topic of entrepreneurship as well. More "snappy" copy about it coming soon!!!

This article puts words to why we at NYCI find the women's events to be important to our mission: https://bit.ly/2EWvfqg

P.S. We are also working on a program that will be open to both male and female conductors, more info coming soon!

We need to reverse the stereotype that women don’t support other women. There is research that shows women in particular benefit from collaboration over competition. Here is advice from women leaders on how to find and cultivate a close network of female professionals.

“...before you can even talk about your ideas to a musician, you have to gain a certain amount of human trust.”

We spoke to conducting legend Paavo JĂ€rvi about the process of becoming a conductor, being a mentor – and how important it is to have someone who believes in you.

Among more than 20 of the major U.S. symphony orchestras, only one woman has the top job of principal conductor. But women are making better gains in the nation's smaller ensembles. The Dallas Opera's Hart Institute for Women Conductors is in its 4th year and it's been getting attention, including from its next door neighbor, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. The Symphony recently launched its own Women in Classical Music initiative. And that's led some to wonder if it's competing...

"Conductors are always behind in growth compared to our instrumental and vocal performer colleagues for a most simple reason: We can't practice our "instrument" called orchestra until we have an orchestra to conduct. One can practice violin for hours and get better, but conductors can only mature through experience with an orchestra. And we rarely get an orchestra until in our 20s or 30s or even later."

We can't wait to see you in New York City this June, Professor Donald Schleicher! https://bit.ly/2IGs3E1

Special Announcement: Big Price Cut

Same Repertoire. Same Podium Time.
Only a number of spots left! Don’t miss this unique opportunity working with Maestro Donald Schleicher and the amazing guest artists!

At NYCI, we strongly believe in the importance for conductors to master the skill of accompanying concertos and operatic recitatives. We have lowered the price drastically, in light of encouraging our fellow conductors to participate in this unique workshop.

Jansons doesn't seem to harbor ill will towards female conductors, but says "it is a question of what one is used to." Like so many social changes, explaining why someone is wrong is usually not useful, if they think it is a matter of "taste" or "preference." Instead, we must keep working to so that seeing women on the podium IS something that people are used to, as opposed to an anomaly.
