Fruits of Your Labour
- D’Aria Wine Farm

A tribute to the hands that harvest, the quiet strength in the rows of the vineyard.
Behind each glass of wine is a story not often told — of early mornings and unspoken pride.
This piece honours the labour that ripens in silence, yet fills our cups with richness and soul 🍷.

A piece in contribution to Durbanville’s 200th Celebrations in April with Eversdal Primary at D’Aria Wine Farm 🍇

Smiles Of Africa: Serene/ Rustig/ Zizolile

Beaufort West, Western Cape

In the midst of hardship, there exists a profound serenity in the heart of a child. Especially this boy. Despite the challenges that surround him, he radiates a quiet strength and resilience that is both humbling and inspiring.
His overbearing patience waiting his turn every single time, waiting that the younger kids can get their teddy first, their soup first…and being so grateful whilst doing it. Bringing a calmness to his environment. A sense of serenity.

In the face of adversity, this child’s serenity is a beacon of hope, a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is light. Their ability to find joy in the smallest of moments, to laugh amidst tears, a hug to your teddy or loved one, is a testament to the power of the human spirit.

Their serenity lies in his unwavering belief that tomorrow can be better, that love, kindness and patience can prevail. It is a reminder to us all that no matter what life may throw at us, there is always room for hope, for faith, and for love.

A new Smiles Of Africa face, all the way from the Transkei to North Carolina❤️

Smiles Of Africa: Bliss/ Saligheid/ Ulonwabo

Seleni, Transkei

Pure bliss within your own circumstances is a powerful state of being that can transform how you perceive the world around you. When you are truly content with your life, it opens your eyes to the beauty that surrounds you. You begin to notice the small wonders that you might have otherwise overlooked—the gentle sway of leaves in the breeze, the warmth of the sun on your skin, the smiles of the children you get to feed.

This sense of contentment often manifests itself in a smile that is so genuine and contagious that it can touch the lives of those around you. Just like this woman from a soupkitchen in a small village in Seleni, Transkei.

Your smile becomes a beacon of joy, lighting up the faces of others and spreading warmth and happiness wherever you go.
Laughter, too, becomes a natural extension of your blissful state. Your laughter is infectious, drawing others in and lifting their spirits. It becomes a shared experience, a moment of joy that brings people together and creates bonds that transcend words.

In this way, your joy has the power to carry a whole village. Your village. Your bliss becomes a gift that you share freely, enriching the lives of those around you and creating a sense of community and togetherness.
So, embrace your bliss, for in doing so, you not only enhance your own life but also the lives of those around you. Your smile and laughter are contagious, and your joy can truly carry a whole village.

Smiles Of Africa: Inspire/ Inspirasie/ Impembelelo

Beaufort West, Western Cape

June 2023: In the cold streets of Beaufort West, our paths crossed. Two worlds that met each other and through everything had something in common - A burning dream.
I feel as though we sometimes believe that we have to help others, but it's in those moments that you realise that it's actually through others that we heal and learn, even if you don't realise it.
There in the cold Beaufort West, where hopes and dreams are only sparsely sown, you inspired me to hold on to that dream. That dream that keeps you up at night. That dream that feels impossible. That dream that is possible!

Together we shared creativity, motivation, dreams, faith & mentorship.

This one is for you Jessica: May you never stop sewing, making clothes & dreaming!

A letter of gratitude:

Jessica,

In the tapestry of life, your story weaves a narrative of ambition, hope, and dedication that resonates with all who encounter it, including me. Your journey, marked by the crucible of hardships, stands as a testament to the indomitable human spirit.
Through the lens of your hard work, one sees a mosaic of resilience. Your beginnings, though humble, were the foundation upon which you have built and will build a life of significance. Each laborious hour and every challenge met with determination became a testament to your unwavering commitment to self-improvement.
It is in your hope that the true essence of your character emerges. In moments where many would falter, you clung to the belief that a brighter tomorrow was within reach. Your optimism became a lifeline, extending beyond yourself to uplift those who needed reassurance, yet again, including me. You inspired me to, just like you do, keep the hope and belief that pur dreams are in fact, within reach, we should just keep going. Just like you have done since you’ve been able to sew. In the face of despair, you were a source of inspiration, reminding us all that hope is a potent force capable of transcending circumstances.
Dedication, etched into the fabric of your being, and the fabric you work with, is the force behind your triumphs. Late nights fueled by ambition and early mornings driven by purpose exemplify the tenacity that defines you. Your commitment to your dreams has not only shaped your future but also serves as a guiding light for others navigating their own paths and dreams & I thank you everyday for that!
Your life is not just a chronicle; it is a manifesto of what one can achieve through unwavering determination. Your ambition, hope, and dedication resonate as a symphony of inspiration, prompting those around you to strive for their own greatness. You met me in a place where, generally I was supposed to mentor you, however, you mentored me. You showed me that despite circumstances, if a dream is placed in your heart - it’s meant to come true. Just like you, I want to reach that point of hope and self-confidence from deep within & that’s what drives me since I met you.

In the tapestry of existence, you are a vibrant thread, stitching together a narrative that speaks to the transformative power of resilience and hope.
Thank you for being a source of inspiration and a living testament to the boundless possibilities that lie within us, even if life tells you that you can’t, YOU showed us that we can accomplish anything.

With admiration,
Marné

Smiles Of Africa: Miracle/ Wonderwerk/ Ummangaliso

Beaufort West, Western Cape

In an old age home in the middle of the Karoo, the smallest smile, hug or greeting means the world. People that lived their lives to the fullest, knowing how to love & being grateful for the simple things in life. Being left alone at the ripe age of 75 and up and still smiling- teaches us young people a few lessons.

In the tapestry of a life well-lived, gratitude becomes the thread that weaves everything together. At the crossroads of aging, there's a profound shift—a gratitude for the simplicity of each breath, for the mundane miracles that surround. Those who've embraced the richness of existence find joy in the delicate dance of everyday moments, grateful for the symphony of laughter, the warmth of sunlight, and the gentle breeze that whispers tales of a life fully experienced. It's not just about counting blessings but relishing each one, savouring the flavour of gratitude for every small thing. In the autumn of life, gratitude becomes an art, and every smile is a masterpiece painted with strokes of appreciation for the beauty that persists in the seemingly ordinary.

Smiles of Africa: Hesitant/ Huiwerig/ Mathidala

Transkei, Eastern Cape

Hesitant/Huiwerig/Mathidala is an illustration portraying one of the daily emotions the children in Africa experience. Hesitant on whether they can go out of the house while it’s still safe, hesitant about whether they should or should not trust the people around them. This is a little girl from Transkei. The beauty behind this artwork is the true emotions and intentions of the African children. They welcome strange, new people into their homes, and the childlike trust that children like this girl have…is desirable. If everyone had this kind of trust, maybe the world would be more at peace. The beauty lies in the hesitance to trust but also the desire to be loved. One thing we can learn from this is that we should have the childlike love and trust for one another like these children have. They live day by day, being unsure about a lot of things in life, but the one certain thing is, that these children will love the people around them as no one else will.

Smiles Of Africa: Yahweh

Beaufort-West, Western Cape

An extra special Beaufort-West smile that is very, very close to my heart❤️ The nameless, the love, the happiness. Yahweh.

This boy's story is not complex or complicated. He just is. He is love. He is peace. He is grace.

Many of us have excuses and reasons why we are not living every day to the fullest and seizing every moment. Too busy, too tired, too selfish.

This boy is an example for us all. Despite a brain disability and more challenges than we can imagine or even face on a daily basis, this boy is the epitome of what we should strive to be. Patient, loving, full of joy & faith like a child - all without saying a word. There is a softness in his eyes and a light that shines from within. It's simple - as the saying goes: "Actions speak louder than words."

We don't know your name. We don't know your age. We don’t know your circumstances. What we do know well is your heart ❤️

May you keep singing, dancing & loving despite what the world does to you ❤️
