9/11 Reflections Diptych, Light and Dark:
Just Under the Surface (2022) Left, Tribute in Light (2023) Right
These two mixed-media paintings were created over the past two years, with a deep focus on the theme of reflection. They are intended as reminders of the enduring impact of 9/11 on our world, even as the years pass. These reflections do not merely replicate what we see; they encapsulate the memories and emotions we carry from that fateful day and the world that existed before it.
In art, reflections often symbolize the interplay between opposing or vastly different ideas. These mirrored images vividly convey the tension inherent in these contrasts.
This painting series comprises two central pieces. The first, "Just Under the Surface," portrays the New York City skyline from 2001 mirrored in the tranquil waters of the Hudson River. The plumes of smoke, reminiscent of that fateful day, shroud the contemporary Manhattan skyline. This composition serves as a reminder that even after 22 years, the reverberations of that tragic event continue to shape our world.
The second piece, "Tribute in Light," captures the reflections of the North and South towers of the World Trade Center in the water. Beams of light reach into the sky as part of the annual Tribute in Light ceremony, which commemorates the towers and all the lives lost on 9/11. Through this artwork, we glimpse a skyline many of us fondly remember and dearly miss—an emblem of the fathers, sons, mothers, daughters, and friends taken from us on that sorrowful day.
Embedded within both images are depictions of every individual lost on 9/11, serving as a reminder and tribute to each person affected by that tragic day. "No day shall erase you from the memory of time."
