I first came to know of Dekontee through TikTok and her series “Things They Don’t Tell You in Acting School,” so I knew she’d be the perfect guest for this series! “Dekontee Tucrkile is a triple-threat performer from California. She got her to start performing in church musicals and community theatre. In high school, she performed with Mayfair High School's award-winning show choir "Showtime."

She continued her education at Vanguard University of Southern California where she received a B.A. in Musical Theatre in 2014.

After graduating from college, she attended Open Jar Institute in New York City and trained at the world-famous improv school Second City (Hollywood location).

She has been seen in theatre shows such as American Idiot, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Mamma Mia. She was also featured in Invisible: A New Sci-fi Musical which made its NYC debut at 54 Below and The Music Man with Adam Pascal.

She performed with the improv- acapella team "Live! On Fire" and had a residency at ComedySportz Los Angeles. She has had the opportunity to work with worked Jeff Whiting, A.J. Rafael, Marc Kudisch, and Tara Strong to name a few.

As a content creator, she has built a following on Tiktok of 26,000. She is best known for her funny skits about the acting industry as well as her advice for new performers. Her Videos have been featured on Broadway World and she has worked with brands such as Backstage.”

Emily Jeanne Phillips is an actress, singer, and dancer living in New York City. From Alden: “I am getting my BFA in theatre & performance from Emerson right now and I also got an artists certificate from Tom Todoroff conservatory, as well as studying with other professional training programs (like BAA!). I think I have a really unique and eye opening perspective because when I first auditioned for programs in 2012/13, I was just this rural girl from backwoods NH who had a skill set but NO IDEA how to audition …so I didn’t get into any programs, but I was fortunate enough to work my way into other short training programs that then turned into more long term training. And now, 8 years later, I am finishing up my college degree in a well respected theatre program as a “non traditional transfer” student. I show that the journey isn’t linear and there isn’t one “perfect” way - that if you don’t nail you fail. That thinking is BS and very exclusionary. Anyway you could basically just read that off and that would be my interview 😂😂😂. Excited to chat!”

This packet proved to be a beast. Over 75 hours of work produced this behemoth of a guide, including every US college that has a theater (or music) department that houses a bachelor’s degree in Musical Theater, Acting, or General Theater Studies (BFA’s, BA’s, BM’s, BS’s, and a few AA’s). I go into detail, too, about what (if any) concentrations, emphases, or focuses are offered within a more liberal arts theater degree at a specific university, and provide details too about any notable minor offerings in performance. Moreover, links are included to every program’s main department site where I was able to find the information.

Students who work with me directly and privately on college prep will now get this resource automatically included in their packages, but this is a great chance to gain access to it a la carte, as it were!

As you all likely know, I’m really passionate about making the process of applying to and auditioning for college… easier. Simply put. The sheer amount of information out there about college theater and arts programs is so overwhelming that it’s almost as if there’s nothing out there. Organizing and breaking down the many opportunities that DO exist was my goal. I know personally from going through this process that behinning is the hardest part, and I hope this guide serves as a first step for students and families as they undergo this process.

I plan to continually update and check in on this document, and welcome your feedback! In addition, I also plan to make various iterations of this guide: for filmmakers, dancers, theater technicians, directors, stage managers, and more!

Lydia Flock is an exceptional vocal coach, vocal massage therapist, published researcher, and social media expert. She was endorsed for the prestigious Global Talent Visa (under Exceptional Promise Criteria) by Arts Council England. Her latest research, Freedom of the Singing Voice: An Exploration of the Mind-Body Connection, Performance Anxiety and Confidence through Methods of Fitzmaurice Voicework, Organic Intelligence, and Ziva Meditation, is published in the peer-reviewed academic journal Voice and Speech Review. Scheherazade is a bilingual performer, director and producer. She played Daniela in the US Spanish Premiere of In The Heights (Helen Hayes Award nomination, BroadwayWorld Award nomination), directed by Broadway’s Luis Salgado. Her original musical Prêt-à-Morté has been selected for the Miami and New York Micro Theatre Festivals and garnered Scheherazade nominations to the Latin ACE Awards (Best Director, Best Musical), and ATI Awards (Best Director, Best Actress). Scheherazade started performing in television to later be part of Venezuela’s professional Original Casts of Fiddler on the Roof, The Producers and the revival of Jesus Christ Superstar. In New York she’s been part of In The Heights (John W. Engemant Theatre) The Laramie Project (Gramercy Arts Theatre), Sweeney Todd (Frederick Loewe Theatre), Street Scene (Brooklyn Lyceum) and Civilization! (45Bleecker Theatre). Trained in Classical Voice and Music Theatre, and alongside renowned acting instructors, she received her Master’s of Music in Vocal Performance from New York University. She also loves to be behind the scenes, which is why she holds a Master’s in Television from Boston University and a Bachelor’s in Communication (Journalism and TV Production).

I’m so excited to announce the guests I’ll be speaking with for Season 1 of , “De-Mystifying the Collegiate Performing Arts Experience (& Beyond)!” ✨✨✨

I wanted to assemble a group of folx whose artistry, perspectives, and backgrounds in the entertainment and performance worlds are not only rich in hands on experience, but also provide unique insight into the thesis of this series: there is no singular path you must follow in order to “make it” or achieve “success” in this business. Rather, our field is made better by a variety of experiences, philosophies, backgrounds, and skill sets - hard earned through college, or not.

These are folx I’ve known and admired personally for a long time, a short time, or virtually as “internet friends,” and I’m personally so excited to discuss the nuances of this subject with them all!

Stay tuned for specific details about when these conversations will take place; we’re aiming for Thursday’s every week, starting February 3rd with one of my best friends, Wesley Diener! It’s happening! I’m so excited to say that a lineup of guests for Season 1 of “College Conversations” will be announced tomorrow here on my Instagram! Y’all, I am so excited to speak about the collegiate arts and performance experience with some people I admire and think the world of, and I know this next generation of artists (and everyone!) will benefit greatly from their perspectives. Before I announce Season 1’s guests tomorrow, I wanted to share first why I think it’s important we talk about this topic and hear from people working in the industry who have had varied experiences within and outside of college programs. If we really want to give students and families the tools to make informed decisions for themselves, they need to have access to knowledge about the wide array of possibilities that lay before them.
