Thanks to all the loveliest of friends and colleagues who came out for my tour of “Manahatta Waterways: a Sanctuary” at the MTA Fulton Center! It was pure joy to share my four videos about our marine neighbors in NYC to such a diverse audience, especially to the little ones who are so wise with living in the moment. 💝Thank you for journeying with me under the ocean in this speculative ecological and geological sanctuary!

SAVE THE DATE: Join me on Saturday, March 14th at 4p for a walk-through tour of my digital commission by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Manahatta Waterways: a Sanctuary at Fulton Transit Center in downtown Manhattan.

My 52-screen video installation traces a descent from whales lunge feeding on Menhaden and spouting at the surface, through kaleidoscopic coral reefs, and down to the mesophotic “twilight zone” nearly 300 feet deep.

DM me for Tour meeting place... Look forward to sharing this artwork with you!

Thanks to everyone who attended my talk with .world at Chan Space last Friday about my recent MTA project! 💚🩵💙
It was heartwarming to see familiar faces and meet new ones too! I loved that my talk started with meditation led by their resident Buddhist monk! Thanks again

Joyce Yu-Jean Lee transforms Fulton Center into an oceanic cathedral with a 52-channel video installation “Manahatta Waterways: A Sanctuary” that symbolically guides viewers down from the street level on a descent through ecological and geological time.⠀⠀

Stop by Fulton station in Manhattan at the top of every hour to view it, now through March!

Did you know that Gorgonian corals—commonly known as “sea fans”—have over 1,200 species documented and make up 64% of all corals on earth? I have been animating mesmerizing footage of these corals from marine biologist, Dr. Sonia J. Rowley. Be on the lookout for this new artwork debuting in NYC in January 2026!
🪸🧡🐠
Dr. Rowley’s explorations utilize closed-circuit rebreather diving in the Mesophotic coral reefs, also known as the “Twilight Zone,” which extend from 30 to 180 meters deep. Sonia dives to this zone where sunlight begins to fade, a feat that involves up to nine hours underwater! She’s documented 8,000 gorgonian samples in her lab in Hawaii and explains, “The deeper we go the less we know.” We both share a fascination for this zone of the ocean and I feel so lucky to animate her footage!

My studio research has taken me on sea and back to land… Perhaps my favorite experience was filming at the Long Island Aquarium
🌊 💙🗽
Thanks to the founder of the aquarium, marine biologist , we shot video of his exquisite coral and shark tanks! Swipe to see how we navigated this challenging shoot—we used a GoPro, an improvised underwater rig for a DSLR and tried out the Chasing Dory drone too. The completed video animation launches soon in January in NYC, so check back for more details!

I’ve been editing some amazing drone footage of humpback whales from the generous award winning aerial photographer ! So amazing to be able to see an aerial perspective of a humpback whale lunge feeding menhaden fish around Long Island. Swipe to see in the studio… Stay tuned for the debut of this new artwork in January 2026!
