Each artist in the exhibition has found an oasis in their studio from the chaos of recent years. Amid tensions of global social-political crisis, our state of being has been in constant agitation as one concern after another has kept us on high alert. Be Still is a meditative counter to the irritation of our gaze by transitioning our field of view to a state of introspection.
The exhibition features artists Leslie Adler, Marcia Branca, Mona Brody, Mika Cali, Sarah Canfield, Lisa Hunt, Jonathan Lewis, Yvette Lucas, Donna Moran, Nan Ring, Rachel Pruzan, Paula Stark, Cynthia Vaughn, and Gail Winbury.
These artists all share studios at Manufacturers Village in East Orange, New Jersey. Built In the 1880s, the Manufacturers Village complex is a well-preserved example of Victorian industrial architecture. It was the original home of Johnson & Johnson - then known as Seabury & Johnson - which made medical plasters and supplies. In the early 1900s, the partners George Seabury and Robert Wood Johnson parted ways. The Seabury family retained ownership of the buildings, renting the spaces to a variety of small businesses over the course of the 20th Century, and up to the present day.
Manufacturers Village is now a nexus for over 60 artists who work in painting, sculpture, installation art and photography, as well as designers and woodworkers. These artists have brought organization and identity to all of the tenants - strengthening the sense of community, and opening endless possibilities for collaboration with East Orange and fellow cultural institutions.
