The Art of Making Movies Film Festival

The Art of Making Movies Film Festival The TAMMIES film festival focuses on the artists who create the props, sets, costumes, and more!

The TAMMIES film festival focuses on the artists who create the props, sets, costumes, special effects, and other behind-the-scenes elements of film and television production and is a celebration of the creative and technical work that goes into bringing stories to life on screen. Our festival includes an in-person screening of films that showcase the work of these artists, as well as panel discussions and workshops with industry professionals who share their experiences and insights about the art and craft of creating movie magic. Additionally, the festival features a small con where attendees can learn more about the tools, techniques, and technologies used by these artists and perhaps even try their hand at creating some of these elements themselves. Overall, our festival provides a unique opportunity for filmmakers, fans, and industry professionals to come together and appreciate the art and craftsmanship that goes into creating memorable and immersive film and television experiences.

Behind every convincing spatial world is a team of artists balancing frame rates with raw emotion.

Visual designers, animators, and spatial audio engineers must sync their crafts perfectly, because in a 360-degree canvas, a single miscalculated shadow or displaced sound breaks the illusion of presence entirely. World-building in VR requires rebuilding how we think about human perception itself. πŸ‘ŒπŸΎ

Which VR environment is the one that truly made you forget the room you were standing in? Tell us in the comments. πŸ’œ

Art is a channel for essential conversations. πŸ•ΊπŸΎAt the last edition of the TAMMFF Awards, Director Michael Bishop explained how his five-part dance film "FLUID" uses movement to explore generational trauma, identity, and healing within his community. By combining choreography with historical context, the project confronts complex societal issues while pointing toward a path forward.

How do you use your own creative craft to speak on meaningful social issues? Let us know in the comments. πŸ‘‡πŸ½

A puppet doesn't act by itself. Someone underneath or behind it is making acting choices in real-time; a breath, shifting weight to suggest hesitation, reacting to another performer, except they're doing it through rods, cables, or their own hand inside a mechanism instead of their own face.

That's not a kids' show skill. That's a specific, physically demanding performance discipline most audiences never think to credit.

If you've ever operated a puppet, tell us the hardest part of the job in the comments! We want to read it from the people who actually do it

Every major career starts with a room full of trial and error.

While still refining his techniques on student sets, Josh Turi faced his first real test: crafting a whole gallon of blo*d on demand. His experience proves that diving headfirst into hands-on challenges early on is what prepares you for a career in practical effects.

The most convincing prop is often the safest one.

What's the most clever breakaway prop or practical effect you've seen, or worked with, on set? Share your experience in the comments. πŸ‘‡πŸ½

Connecting with this community reminds us why local exhibitions matter! πŸ™†πŸ½β€β™€οΈ

We had an incredible time attending the IND/EX Conference in Chicago last month. A huge thank you to the team at IND/EX, along with the Art House Convergence and the Film Festival Alliance, for organizing an event that focuses so deeply on advancing and sustaining our industry.

Behind every great film is a network of independent festivals and exhibitors working to bring it to an audience. Supporting your local festival is the best way to keep that ecosystem alive. πŸ’œ

Long before we stepped on a real set, they were helping us build the worlds in our heads. Today, we honor the fathers who handed us the tools and taught us how to tell our first stories. We celebrate the groundwork you laid that allows our creativity to thrive.

Happy Father's Day!
