Thank you Japan Contemporaries for the feature review of Kaori Someya: The Light Within, the current solo exhibition on view at Ippodo Gallery.

“The light Someya seeks to paint is not an external illumination cast upon a woman to enhance the beauty of her appearance. It comes, rather, from within: from those dimensions of human existence that ordinarily remain invisible to others—will, memory, pain, endurance, desire, hope, and the determination to remain oneself. In Someya’s paintings, these intangible forces seem to gather beneath the visible surface and quietly radiate outward.”

Adrift deep beneath the water, Someya imbues the figure with the negative emotions that bubble to the surface as a contemporary woman in Japanese society. During the pandemic, she spent much time isolated in her studio parsing these feelings. The kimono is devoid of color, calling into question whether the wearer really exists at all. Diving deep into the source of her happiness, Someya realized, through the creative process, the wonder of interpersonal relationships and the trivial talk that may otherwise go disregarded. Goldfish may speak to the short-mindedness with which people conduct themselves in modern society as attention is divided ever further, but they have positive connotations, too, as symbols of good fortune.

The master doll maker Junko Narita creates fantastical dolls that look like the protagonists of stories from Chinese and Japanese mythology descending from the sky. Enveloped in beautiful costumes, each seems like a visitor from an unknown land.

S***a Suzuki seamlessly emulates the falling gingko leaves of Autumn in his latest works. Drawing upon rich natural colors, Suzuki imagines plant life from brass alloy and other metals such as gold, silver, copper, and nickel. Hammering flat sheets and long fibers, Suzuki manipulates the hot metal with forging, soldering, and hand-sculpting techniques until the plant structure is a perfect mimicry of its living counterpart.

Suzuki’s work will be featured at our booth during Fine Arts Paris 2026. He will be present at the fair today, September 21, through the 22.

Midori Tsukada utilizes gravity in her forms while melting sheets of glass over copper leaf. She employs highly-skilled techniques-grinding in a spray of water to create lines of minute delicacy or filing, making a translucence like that of light shining down through the leaves of a forest. They possess a Japanese sensibility evocative of rain, dew, or bamboo groves, filled with a clear atmosphere and organic energy.

Tsukada’s work will be featured at our booth during Fine Arts Paris 2026.

Shigeki Fukumoto's practice is grounded in the belief that both theoretical and cultural research are essential to dyeing. Using large panels, Fukumoto has developed innovative techniques that combine traditional dyeing methods with new concepts. Through these, he creates works that evoke both inevitability and chance, exploring the natural principles of dye permeation and the unique expressive qualities of dyed surfaces.

Winner of the 2025 LOEWE Craft Prize, Aoki is contemporary master recognized for the outstanding quality of his hand-sculpted terracotta ceramics. His work will be featured at our booth during Fine Arts Paris 2026.

We are thrilled to announce the opening of Fine Arts Paris 2026. Ippodo Gallery makes its Paris debut with sixteen of Japan's living masters, working in clay, lacquer, bamboo, dyed textile, glass and forged metal.

Japanese art has been shown at The Grand Palais since 1900; these artists re-interpret its inherited forms in close dialogue with their own art history.

“Quiet Metamorphosis: A Resurgence of Kogei” will be on view in booth N25 from September 19-23.
