Hendrix College invites applications for a Murphy Fellow in Literature and Language/Theatre Arts to begin in August 2025 for a three-year term position. The College seeks to extend its tradition of excellence in teaching and scholarship by attracting faculty who combine mastery of their disciplines with broad intellectual interests and commitment to the aims of a liberal arts college. Background and expertise in dramatic literature is required. Candidates should demonstrate evidence of both academic and artistic activity. Successful applicants will have experience in teaching playwriting; an additional area such as script analysis, theatre history, or directing is desirable. Applicants whose perspectives and/or works explore experiences underrepresented in American theatre are particularly encouraged to apply. The Fellow may have the opportunity to teach an Oxford-style tutorial course in dramatic literature; if so, appropriate training in that pedagogy will be provided by the College.

October 4 is Black Theater Night for GOOD BONES. Following the performance there will be an incredible panel including Jame Ijames, Saheem Ali, Xochitl Gonzalez, and Council Member Chi Ossé, and a reception with light snacks and beverages. Use code CHICHI48 to unlock $40 (plus fees) tickets to the October 4 performance. We welcome and encourage everyone to reach out to friends and networks they believe will be interested in attending this special performance. We also ask everyone honor the intention for the affinity community space.

Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright James Ijames explores gentrification and the growing price of the American dream in his sharp, funny new play, GOOD BONES. A work opportunity to revitalize the blighted neighborhood she grew up in has led Aisha and her chef husband Travis to buy and renovate a charming old house. But as everyone knows, renovation is expensive and stressful—both for buildings and the communities that surround them. Aisha’s young contractor Earl grew up in the area too, but his memories are of more than just dangerous streets and hollowed-out homes. When their purely professional relationship gives way to heated debate about who gets to stay and who must go, Aisha is forced to reckon with the choices she’s made to get ahead and the painful, joyful, complicated ghosts that haunt her dreams… and her dream house. The Public’s Associate Artistic Director Saheem Ali directs this New York premiere new play about community, change, and the soul of our cities.
