Working on a new series of work with roofing nails as my medium as part of a class on unconventional materials in sculpture. Ever since building a roof with my dad last year, I’ve been thinking about how much I love these nails, their iridescent nature and the way in which they are string but also can appear soft. The contrast is really beautiful. I am playing tower different types colors and size. Which resonates with you?

Apparently #911 is a meme now, which makes me irrepressibly sad. Sending love to those who lost people, whose lives were impacted, for whom the wound is still open and for those whose scars are a constant reminder of a day of tragedy on American soil. #911

So much of the time I have spent trying to fit into someone’s box to get something I wanted. I had to be the right kind of artist or the right sort of professional to get the right job or the right show. Sculpture art or oil painter? Communications professional or start-up entrepreneur? Always either or because people didn’t understand than being both and actually made me better at both. Part of what I’m doing now is owning my hybridity and understanding that people who can’t accept both are only showing their limited thinking and constricted worldviews. I’m hoping more opportunities come from leading by example. If I allow myself to be a hybrid, hopefully other hybrids will join me. Thank you Sarah Beth Berk for helping to provide context on this.

Spent the week traveling. First to because I have lost and had to get a new passport 😭. Then to visit a friend and her babies. I got stuck for a night in and then went onward for work in . Because I was gone from the I spent my time using my iPad to continue the bird series. It’s been fun to try using oil paints in a new digital format. What do you think?

Making these (still very much work in progress) paintings brings me so much joy. Perhaps the most joy I’ve ever felt while painting. It’s as if my body feels it can release something I’ve been carrying around for too long. I don’t know how else to describe it. What do they make you feel?

As an artist, I find making art fascinating because I rarely going into a painting knowing what I want to make. Instead I go to play around with color or an idea. The first painting is the result of just playing around…. For three years. It’s nearly but not quite done. The second painting is a new idea. One where I thought “I want to draw sort of punk-rock birds in really vibrant worlds.” BUT I really went in with a very strong idea and even sketched it first, which I never do. Both ideas are me. Both styles of working are me. I’m always surprised by the brain and the machinations of creativity. Does your work ever change like this? Tell me about it. ❤️🦜
