This marks a historic shift, as registration for the lottery has always been completely free.
According to the US Department of State (DOS), the $1 fee is separate from the mandatory $330 (about Ksh 42,619) application fee that applicants pay only if they are selected for an interview.
The new policy will take effect for the 2027 Diversity Visa lottery, which opens this October and will also apply to all future lotteries.
Applicants are urged to prepare early and ensure they follow official instructions carefully to avoid scams.
