A few weeks ago I took my seat in a West End theater next to Sue Bendall. We talked about the show… theater… New York. Then she told me about her best friend, Michele, who died on 9/11. She asked if I would stop by the Memorial. It’s amazing how both tragedy and theater can bring people together. Fall is in the air…shows are in rehearsals…readings…workshops…calendars ‘filling…Broadway is gearing up!

I often think back to the first year of my BFA at Emerson College. This pic is from our “New Student Musical Revue.” New folks to meet…new shows to audition for…new classes…new experiences. I had no idea where my life would be nearly 30 years later.

Sometimes I get caught up in what my life will be 30 years from now. Goals…(how many shows will I lead produce?)…impact (how can I be an agent for change to uplift and strengthen my community?)….health (mental, physical, emotional, financial.)

Whatever your new beginnings hold, wishing you every success!

PS- Sondheim’s “Putting Together” was our opening song for the revue. I sang a solo Julie Andrews sang. Man, she’s been such an icon in my life from the VERY beginning.

When I’m not creating new musicals, my favorite role is grandma. Thanks to these two (who also both had birthdays and an anniversary this summer) we have been given the greatest gift—to cherish a grandbaby and celebrate the next generation. Ken always promised he would help me find successful faster than if left to my own devices. He did.

For five years I met basically weekly with Ken for coaching. I also was named Producer of the Year for his Theater Makers Studios, I rent an office space from him, and I’ve hired him as an Executive Producer.

Suffice to say my Broadway producing career would not exist without Ken Davenport.

Yes, Ken, I will thank you in my future Tony acceptance speech, and I will also thank you here.

Thank you for saying ‘yes’ to coaching this eager-producer-to-be over SIX YEARS ago. Your influence on my work is undeniable.

Thank you for your mentorship and for teaching me how to think outside the box. Thank you for your friendship.

And they’re off! Oh, how I love these two and I love even more that they are back to the routine. Summer can be loooooooong.

Oliver starts 10th grade (!!) Jacob starts his post-high school “ASPIRE” program: Adult Student Program In Reaching Empowerment.

They’ve grown a foot or two this summer and the youngest is now the tallest. (Much to Jacob’s chagrin.)

They are happy. They are helpful. They are kind. (And they can drive each other crazy.) They are looking forward to the new year ahead, and I can’t wait to see what’s in store.

If you know the Rasmussens, then you know summer is for birthdays! All but two of us have birthdays during these glorious summer days. 4 within 2 weeks and 2 more within another 2 week extension. It’s easy for this youngest to get overlooked—especially when he’s the last of the summer birthday slide. But who could overlook this kid??

Oliver came crashing into this life with vigor, strong preferences, a commitment to do it all, and a sense of humor that still keeps us in stitches.

Cheers to the caboose. Cheers to the one that unlocked our world of Fragile X. Cheers to a tender heart, compassion, an awareness of everyone around him. Cheers to personality for days and an uncanny ability to communicate volumes without saying a word.

We love you kiddo. So glad you are ours.

I’m a nerd. David and I hosted an intimate dinner party on Friday. Yes, my table was set four weeks ago. This is my kind of fun. Every time I’d walk by the table I’d adjust something; add a silver ring napkin holder, a name card, a taper.

Oh I love the drama of entertaining. A dinner party can have lighting and scenic design and even a story arch to the evening. A massive thunderstorm shut down the airport and kept two of our out-of-town guest from making it. How’s that for an unexpected plot change? Oh well. The show must go on…so we just rolled with it.

I love making new friends and strengthening bonds with existing friends. There’s no better way to do that than by breaking bread together.

It was a fast a furious 72 hours at home, but so worth it. Already back in London with memories of the weekend to savor.

July was a good one!

A birthday lunch with my brother, new additions to the collage, hydrangeas for days, office candid, first mahjong, summer memories, more summer birthdays, green thumb hopeful, prepping for a dinner party, 4th of July at Church, conversations and connections, 7 hour direct flight, 🇬🇧,🇬🇧, 🇬🇧 Spells of the Sea in the UK!

International collaboration seems to be the new way we develop theater. I’ve been blessed to work with incredible colleagues in Japan for the past three years. Currently I’m working with collaborators in the UK, Canada, Japan and Australia. That nearly covers the globe! When we’re not calibrating time zones, I’m grateful for WhatsApp, FaceTime Audio, Zoom and emails that can come and go at anytime day or night.
