Do you know the man behind the Statue of Liberty 🗽?

French sculptor Auguste Bartholdi was commissioned by France to design a monumental work commemorating the centennial of American independence. Following exhaustive construction and fundraising efforts, Bartholdi’s creation - the world’s largest sculpture at the time of its completion - was sent across the Atlantic to be assembled in New York Harbor.

Musée d'Orsay’s new exhibition “Auguste Bartholdi Liberty Enlightening the World" explores the Alsatian artist’s trailblazing career, from his earliest projects to this 305-foot icon of American independence, and the aesthetic, economic, and technological choices that brought this dream to life.

Leonardo Sandoval, knows a good combination 👞🎶

The award-winning dancer and choreographer has expanded the bounds of tap dancing through infusing Afro-Brazilian traditions like samba, forró, maracatu, and passinho.

Yet sometimes the most unexpected combinations are the most impactful. Connecting with fellow Vilcek Foundation prizewinners has broadened Leonardo’s artistic horizons even more, offering new perspectives and approaches to dance that could be integrated into his own evolving practice.

As the air turns crisp, we’re welcoming the new season with “Autumn Landscape, Dogtown” (1934) by American Modernist Marsden Hartley.

Inspired by the landscapes around him, Hartley returned to the artist’s haven of Gloucester, Massachusetts throughout his career. Hartley was especially drawn to the rugged terrain of Gloucester’s Dogtown areas. He first painted its massive boulders and verdant forests in 1931 and returned Dogtown’s striking scenery throughout his career.

Part archaeological excavation, part open-air laboratory, artist Anicka Yi’s new installation at Storm King Art Center investigates ecological evolution through sculpture.

Situated in a shallow pool on Storm King’s rolling upstate New York campus, “Message from the Mud” features transparent columns filled with organic matter and living organisms. This living artwork grows day by day, inviting questions about environmental conditions, temporality, and stewardship in the 21st century.

Vilcek Foundation curator Eana Kim spoke with the artist about her first large-scale outdoor installation for BOMB Magazine.

Don’t miss the drama at Americas Society/Council of the Americas' new exhibition “Telenovela,” now open in New York City!

Exploring the cultural significance of telenovelas – the most circulated Latino cultural product of the postwar 20th century – across the Western Hemisphere, “Telenovela” features over 50 artworks and audiovisual installations.

The show traces how these hit limited-run television dramas have gone beyond pop culture to become sites of community building and engagement.

“Telenovela” is curated by Art at Americas Society director and chief curator Aimé Iglesias Lukin, recipient of the 2025 Vilcek Prize for Creative Promise in Curatorial Work, and on view through early 2027.

Make your own unique tapestry with artist Thương Hoài Trần, inspired by their current exhibition “Threads of Offering” at Plains Art Museum! 🧶✨

In this 4-day, hands-on workshop, participants will learn tapestry weaving and experiment with painted warp techniques while exploring the possibilities of color, structure, and textile craft.

Thương draws on their diasporic experience as an immigrant and a Vietnamese American, using family photographs to examine themes of displacement, loss of language, and generational disconnect in their interdisciplinary art practice.

Feeling blue about the end of summer? 🌀

With two vases of flowers, a bottle and glass, a bowl of fruit, an open book, and the “Sports” page, Stuart Davis’ “Blue Still Life” (1922) captures the remains of a relaxing season, making it the perfect conclusion to American Artist Appreciation Month.

“Blue Still Life” is one of four large still lifes in the Vilcek Foundation Collection, and likely the earliest. The upturned table suggests the influence of French impressionist Paul Cézanne while the flattened plane marks Davis’ entrée into cubism.
