This was the genesis of the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, later known as the 'Ghost Army.' Not a unit of hardened combatants, but a motley crew of artists, designers, sound engineers, actors, and radio operators, many recruited from art schools and advertising agencies. Their mission: to impersonate two divisions – 30,000 men – using nothing but their wits and an arsenal of inflatable tanks, fake radio chatter, and expertly crafted sound effects.
