We are deeply saddened by the passing of Paul Reubens. Paul was a truly unique, brilliant, and groundbreaking artist and showed us what a true original is. As “Pee-wee Herman” he brought joy to audiences of all ages throughout the world on the small and silver screens and in his live performances. Paul was a dear friend and never missed my birthday and the day was always filled with funny birthday videos. He was one of the first comedians who performed at Carolines in Chelsea and later at our South Street Seaport location in the 1980s and was an integral part of the club’s early success. He always captivated audiences with his offbeat, eccentric humor and persona, and always brought the house down when he would don a pair of platform shoes, jump atop a table and do his signature dance to “Tequila”. His endearing body of work will be remembered and cherished forever, and he and all of his big adventures will be missed by all. – Caroline Hirsch

Our Story

Carolines first opened as a small cabaret club in the New York’s Chelsea neighborhood in 1982. Owner Caroline Hirsch, a lifelong comedy fan, soon began booking comedians in her room. The comedy acts - which included now legendary performers like Jerry Seinfeld, Tim Allen, Billy Crystal, Rosie O'Donnell and Jay Leno - were a tremendous success, and it wasn’t long before Carolines became a full-fledged comedy club. As the popularity of stand-up surged throughout the 1980s, so did the popularity of Carolines, which was becoming THE place to see live comedy in New York City.

Today, Carolines on Broadway continues to hold center stage in Times Square as one of New York City’s most popular and enduring hotspots and as the city’s only genuine nightclub. The club is a New York institution and was one of the cornerstones in the revitalization of the vibrant and bustling Times Square district.

Carolines on Broadway also produces the highly successful New York Comedy Festival, a five-day comedy festival that presents comedy’s biggest stars in New York’s most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall, Town Hall, The Beacon Theatre, The Apollo Theatre, Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center, Madison Square Garden, and the Hammerstein Ballroom, to name a few.

To our Carolines family and friends:

After 30 wonderful years at our location in Times Square, we have decided not to renew our lease. Our final shows here will be on December 31.

Carolines began 40 years ago in Chelsea and later moved to the South Street Seaport before calling Times Square home in 1992, when many New Yorkers and businesses had written off Times Square and NYC overall due to record high crime and a lack of proactive government solutions. People thought we were crazy to invest in Times Square, only later to say that we were ahead of the curve when global brands like Disney, Nasdaq and national retailers and businesses came to the neighborhood. We are very proud to have played an integral role in its resurgence and brought much needed laughter to the neighborhood and the city.

We’ve had an incredible run these past 40 years, elevating comedy from the very beginning and we are so proud of the comedians that have graced our stages throughout the years with their considerable talents. As we continue to expand the brand, Carolines next “stage” will be larger and bring the best comedy to more people in more places. We will also continue to grow the New York Comedy Festival throughout the city and the country. No matter the shape or form of Carolines’ future platform, we will always shine a spotlight on emerging talent.

We are very excited about the future of the Carolines brand and will provide updates through our social media channels, so be sure to follow us.

We want to thank the comedians, our incredibly talented staff and all of the comedy fans who have visited the club throughout the years to help make Carolines the success it has been for the last four decades.
