André Heller shapes Luna Luna.

It was his mission to unite groundbreaking artists for a one-of-a-kind project. Powered by a ceaseless curiosity and desire to traverse artistic mediums, Heller envisioned Luna Luna as a “total work of art.”

In addition to planning the fair, the artist contributed two iconic attractions, The Dream Station, an inflatable, spiked balloon sculpture that housed a café, and the legendary Wedding Chapel, where guests could marry whomever or whatever they pleased.

Luna Luna continues Heller’s interest in creating fun and entertaining experiences for the masses.

Monika GilSing’s Fabric in Flight.

First imagined as designs in a notebook, Monika GilSing’s 28 fabric-based flags titled “Wind Images” were brought to life at Luna Luna in 1987.

Animated with motifs and characters such as birds and witches, she aimed to imbue her flags with a sense of joy and playfulness.

GilSing, who often creates works for the outdoors, displayed her vibrant flags throughout the fairground for visitors to enjoy as they rippled in the wind.

When Luna Luna opened in Germany in 1987, it was greeted with rain. Lots and lots of rain. Guests entered the grounds and came upon wild sights and sounds, including a symphony of farts, stilt-walkers, and a satirical take on the N***s. The amusement park was deemed a success and the press said it was headed for a world tour. But when plans fell apart, André turned his passions elsewhere.

Kenny Scharf shapes Luna Luna.

After weeks of painting in a Vienna warehouse, Kenny Scharf’s customized Victorian-style chair swing ride for the 1987 park was complete with vibrant, spray-painted panels, and the artist’s signature oversized, grinning cartoon heads.

The swing ride sent passengers soaring through the air where they caught a glimpse of the park and Scharf’s surreal figures, who beckoned visitors with their energy and playfulness.
