We will present Night Moves (2016) by Urs Fischer at Art Basel Hong Kong. In this work, the artist’s own face is transferred onto aluminum panels, fragmented, and reconstructed as an image liberated from the signifier of “the self.”
We will also exhibit a rare large-scale work, Black Vein, by Kazuo Shiraga (born 1924), in which the entire surface is covered with layers of melanin putty. Its counterpart is held in the collection of the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art.
In addition, the presentation includes paintings from the 1960s “Shadow” series by Jiro Takamatsu (born 1936); the video work My Face by Shigeko Kubota (born 1937), which will be presented publicly for the first time; works by Toshiro Yoshida (born 1928) and Chiyu Uemae (born 1920); paintings by Katherine Jacobs (born 1958), who creates dreamlike imagery by transferring tree patterns onto canvas; works by Carol Rama (born 1918), who was the subject of major retrospective exhibitions last year at the Aspen Art Museum and the Kunstmuseum Bern; and a group of 1970s drawings and photographic works by Birgit Jürgenssen (born 1949), a key figure in Vienna’s feminist movement, whose works from the same series were presented at the Venice Biennale.
