9/24/2026 at Project St. Anne, Inc’s Fundraiser, Okai Musik opened the Festivities by “Sonnen lanbi pou Ayiti” A traditional Haitian expression that means blowing a conch shell to call the Haitian people together for unity, resistance, and action.

Cultural Meaning
• Ancestral Roots: In Haitian Vodou culture, blowing the conch (called lambi) was a way to talk with spirits and connect with Africa, known as Ginen.

• A Call to Gather: Historically, the sound alerted people in the community or signaled important gatherings.

• Unity and Strength: Today, hearing the lambi during protests or community events symbolizes standing strong together to defend the nation.

Gilbert Bigio, the founder of GB Group and one of Haiti’s most prominent private-sector figures, has died at the age of 91 in the United States.

Over five decades, Bigio constructed a vast commercial empire spanning steel, consumer goods, energy and major logistics infrastructure, including Port Lafito, Haiti’s first deepwater-capable port. His commercial interests also extended across the Caribbean, notably through fuel distribution in Jamaica and the Dominican Republic.

Alongside his extensive business footprint, Bigio faced significant international scrutiny. Named in the 2021 Pandora Papers investigation regarding offshore assets, he was also sanctioned by the Canadian government in 2022 over allegations of providing financial and operational support to armed gangs in Haiti—allegations he denied.
