Its a funny thing painting wildlife in my Brooklyn studio. Although I do hear the occasional dove and plenty of pigeon roosting nearby, most of my “natural sounds” are semi trucks, honking and music from the cars down below my studio. It really does feel like painting in the concrete jungle, a place radiating energy. I’ve honestly grown very accustomed to the tune of the city and feel it helps to spur on paintings celebrating the wild found elsewhere. Sound on to hear what I hear.

One of the first animals I ever painted for a gallery was a giraffe over 15 years ago. I’m still painting giraffe and love every minute of it! When you really think about it they are just so wonderfully beautifully bizarre.

For over a decade I left the eyes of my animals unpainted, simple black shapes, that worked seamlessly into the painting. All of the animals expression was made up the tufts of fur (feathers in this case). It was so natural feeling that most people didn’t even notice unless I pointed it out.

Lately, I’ve really enjoyed sparking little glimmers of eye details in my works. Its opened opportunity for brilliant bursts of color like the yellow for this mother flamingo.
