Anton Chekhov’s THE REAL IVANOV, adapted and directed by Laura Strausfeld, is currently on stage through September 19 at the Lynn F. Angelson Theater.

In the course of a year, Nikolai Ivanov—mid-30s, once charismatic and admired—has become overwhelmed and depressed. Everyone around him thinks they know why. Ivanov isn't convinced. Laura Strausfeld’s faithful, fast-paced, and gripping adaptation captures the central insight of Chekhov's first masterpiece: misunderstanding one another is both comic and calamitous.

Tickets are available online at realivanov.com, where you can also find the complete performance schedule.

The Lynn F. Angelson Theater is located at 136 East 13th Street in the East Village.

John Donnelly’s THE PASS, directed by Max Hunter, is currently on stage through September 18 at La MaMa.

A hotel room in Eastern Europe, 2014. On the eve of their first Champions League match, two rising British football stars find themselves facing something neither preseason training nor media coaching could prepare them for.

Sharp, sexy, and darkly funny, THE PASS explores masculinity, desire, and the brutal machinery of fame. Sometimes the biggest risk isn’t losing the match.

Tickets are available online at themaxhuntercompany.com, where you can also find the complete performance schedule.

La MaMa is located at 66 East 4th Street in the East Village.

The world premiere of L.B. Browne’s SAFE HOUSE, directed by Benjamin Viertel and produced by split/decision, opens September 3 and runs through September 13 at Theatre Row.

SAFE HOUSE is a family drama set in the days leading up to a U.S. presidential election. Convinced the second American civil war is imminent, Rock, a father secretly dying of a hereditary neurodegenerative disease, becomes consumed by the need to protect his family. In the basement of his Pennsylvania suburban home, transformed, beam by beam, into a doomsday bunker, he has built what he believes is the last safe place on earth.

But when his estranged teenage daughter, Claire, returns home unexpectedly, the tensions that have long simmered beneath the surface of the household break open, and the father’s obsession with safety turns into something else entirely.

What follows is a reckoning with fear, and the consequences of confusing love with control.

Lily Jack Productions’ TO HAVE AND TO HOLD, written by Laura Lapidus and directed by Zoë Adams, is currently running through September 12 at Chashama’s Theater 154.

Kate is never getting married. It’s an instrument of the patriarchy! Besides, her sister and best friend—Bianca—is the only partner Kate has ever needed.

But wait… Bianca is getting married!?!?!?!

Kate’s stance against the whole ordeal pushes Bianca away for the first time since their mom died, back when they were kids. Enter the incredibly sexy Peter, vying hot and heavy for Kate while she is trying to mope at the grocery store. But with Bianca’s voice ringing through her head, Kate is forced to question her once-prized world order.

Hilarious and heartfelt, this not-really-an-adaption of Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew” asks: Do the stories we dream for ourselves stand a chance against the ones that are already written for us?

Eric Bentley’s ARE YOU NOW OR HAVE YOU EVER BEEN, directed by Anna D. Shapiro, is currently running through September 11 at New York City Center.

A rotating all-star cast comes together for a timely and important revival of Eric Bentley's electrifying docudrama, exploring the tense world of the 1940s House Committee on Un-American Activities hearings. Using only original transcripts, the words of iconic artists like Arthur Miller, Jerome Robbins, Paul Robeson, Elia Kazan, Lillian Hellman, Abe Burrows, and Lionel Stander are brought to life. We see them forced to face impossible choices: defend their integrity, protect their careers, or betray their peers. The probing, chilling questions posed by the committee are as powerful as the testimonies themselves, revealing a climate of intimidation and moral conflict that resonates far beyond its time.

REMAINING PERFORMANCES (as of 8/30/26):

Apocalyptic Artists Ensemble is presenting a workshop presentation of Mary Hamilton’s 16 WINTERS, OR THE BEAR’S TALE, directed by Kea Trevett, on August 29 and August 30 at The Episcopal Actors’ Guild.

In a secluded cabin in the woods, a queen wakes from a nightmare; a king spirals; and their attendants—two middle ranking lords and ladies (“nobodies, really”)—are left to clean up the pieces of a kingdom in the wake of a tragedy. Meanwhile, time plays with everyone’s hearts as they wait for a prophecy to restore what has been lost.

Mary Hamilton’s 16 WINTERS, OR THE BEAR’S TALE imagines the unknowable events of the 16 year gap between Acts 3 and 4 of “The Winter’s Tale.” Igniting a conversation between Shakespeare's classic and the next generation of storytellers, 116 WINTERS, OR THE BEAR’S TALE asks how we outlive tragedy, and reckons with the surprising and inevitable consequences of time’s passing.

PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE:
Saturday, August 29 @ 2:00pm
Sunday, August 30 @ 2:00pm

Tickets are $35, and are available online at apocalypticartists.org.

The Episcopal Actors’ Guild is located at 1 East 29th Street in Midtown South.
