Dear Ralph:

I have just seen some more of your paintings in a magazine. I, at this moment, feel exhilerated; that is what your art (and it is art in the great sense of the word: not Art, as something for a favored few) does to me. Your people, there they are in crowds, yet I know each of them, jump right through the frame. They are alive!

Of course, your panels commemorating the Lawrence Textile Strike of so many years ago recreate history as no book I know. That which had been hidden history becomes known and so contemporary.

Therein lies your giftedness: your deceptive simplicity that tells it all. The way you capture the throb of a large metropolis! Fasanella's City is worth a dozen civics books; it tells us much more; of those who make the place tick; the ordinary working people who are really extraordinary.

If ever there were an artist worthy of a foundation grant, it is Ralph Fasanella.

I think of our school children and the terrible state of education in our country; how little they know of our past and our bewildering present. Your works are something, I'm certain, would make them jump out of their seats. Imagine the lively discussions that would follow! The children asleep would become the children awake. That's what art does; that's what you do.

RALPH FASANELLA The Great Strike: Lawrence 1912 (1978) // Oil painting via the estate of Ralph Fasanella

The Lawrence Textile Strike, also known as the Bread and Roses Strike, was a strike of immigrant workers in Lawrence, Massachusetts, in 1912 led by the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW).

Prompted by a two-hour pay cut corresponding to a new law shortening the workweek for women, the strike spread rapidly through the town, growing to more than twenty thousand workers and involving nearly every mill in Lawrence.

The strike united workers from more than 51 different nationalities. A large portion of the striking workers, including many of the leaders of the strike, were Italian immigrants. Carried on throughout a brutally cold winter, the strike lasted more than two months, from January to March, defying the assumptions of conservative trade unions within the American Federation of Labor (AFL) that immigrant, largely female, and ethnically divided workers could not be organized.
