“Quimbara” is not a spanish word. Don´t waste you time looking for the meaning of this because you won´t find it. But where do this come from?
To understand that we have to travel to Africa, were it all started. When the massive immigration of african slaves occurred at the beginning of the XVI century, slaves brought with them their culture an religion. As Cuba and Haiti were ports of slaves, many of them stayed there making it home. One thing they brought to America was Vudú. As you may know Vudu is the religion of afroamericans (in latin america). So as this religions mixed with the spanish descendant population it all get mixed up with rituals, names for gods, angels, etc. giving birth to what is now “Santería” (Cuba), Candomblé (Dominican Republic) and Umbanda or Kimbanda in Brasil.
