I am absolutely stunned and extremely sad to hear of the passing of Maestro Wayne Shorter. I will go about this day thinking about all of the joy this great saxophonist, composer, wise sage and great human being shared with me and all of us. I will listen to Armageddon, The Last Silk Hat, Children of the Night, Midnight in Carlottas Hair, Miracle of the Fishes, From the Lonely Afternoons, Elegant People, Lusitanos and I’ll ride with him, On the Milky Way Express. :(((

RIP Jerry Dodgion

To Jerry Dodgion A sad ‘farewell’. I came to NYC in Sept 1966 and went to hear Thad and Mel’s band first thing, and still remember Jerry’s slicked back hair and that little smile he always kept when he wasn’t playing. I still use him as an example onstage when I try to smile when I really don’t feel like it…(and it mostly never works for me, because on him it was real!) He played on my first record “Score” and we did countless sessions or gigs with Thad and Mel, Duke Pearson’s big band, Carnegie Hall Jazz Orchestra, rehearsal bands, Jazz Cruises… He seemed to be everywhere, and with good reason: he simply played his unassuming ass off. Last time I saw him was a get together at the union to honor him a few years ago and he seemed to be in some kind Alzheimer state, but to me he’ll always be the best lead and solo alto saxophonist around (his only competition was his best friend Phil Woods), and Jerry was the absolute most humble and upbeat person in the room. He just had a ball with his horn and Music. I’ll treasure those memories…
