Artist Saif Azzuz often uses reclaimed and found materials in his practice. He intentionally reuses materials to reduce his footprint, but Azzuz is also interested in the life the material had prior, and the stories that brings to the artwork.
With "weych-pues / tàkhòne (where the rivers meet)" the matierals are one of the ways the artist connects the Hudson and Klammath rivers, and their regions. The metal is comprised of car hoods from the Hudson Valley, scrap metal that was already onsite at Storm King, as well as mild steel that was sourced locally. Inside the sturgeon is abalone from Northern California, from the reservation where the artist's mother and family live, and walnut from trees that were removed in the Bay Area of Northern California.
