Strates Shows is Proud Of Its Greek Heritage! James E. Strates, the founder of carnival midway provider Strates Shows, immigrated to the United States from Greece in 1909 at the age of 15. Proud of his Spartan heritage, Strates embraced hard work, taking on various jobs in a shoe factory, cotton mill, and restaurant as he adjusted to his new life in America, all while dreaming of owning his own business. In 1919, he joined a carnival athletic show as a wrestler, challenging competitors along the way. By 1923, Strates co-founded his own carnival known as Southern Tier Shows in Bath, New York. In 1932, the company was renamed James E. Strates Shows, which he transformed into one of the largest traveling amusement enterprises in North America. 102 years later, Strates Shows is still family owned and operated!
