Contracting HIV from contaminated blood products, Ryan White was a teenage hemophiliac who got barred from his school and spent years facing death threats from neighbors who believed he could infect them by breathing near them.

Being a fan of "Who's the Boss?" as well, White was reached out to by Milano when she heard. Becoming friends, they spent six hours making friendship bracelets together at one party.

Asking her for something specific next, he requested she come on "The Phil Donahue Show" with him and kiss him on camera, so the country could see that nothing happened.

Kissing him on the cheek was what she did. Following her too were hate mail and death threats. Dying on April 8, 1990, White was 18.

Telling the story for nearly four decades now, Milano keeps returning to the exact same line: that was the moment she understood what being famous was actually for. Tracing back to a cheek kiss on daytime television for a boy who was running out of time is every cause she's attached her name to since, including UNICEF, women's rights, and the hashtag in 2017.
