The New Orleans Opera Association mourns the passing of longtime stage director David Morelock, who passed away peacefully on May 13, 2026, at the age of 94.

For nearly 40 years, David helped shape opera in New Orleans through his extraordinary work with the Association, beginning with his first production of Les pêcheurs de perles in 1971. He also served as director of Loyola Opera Theatre from 1994–2009, mentoring generations of young artists and helping guide them from the classroom to the professional stage.

His artistry, passion, and dedication to opera left a lasting impact on our company, our city, and countless performers and audiences.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, students, and all who had the privilege of working alongside him.
