This is American Routes with a tribute to the legendary New Orleans drummer, James Black. Black also composed tunes like "Monkey Puzzle" and "Dee Wee," both recorded by Ellis Marsalis' ensemble in the early 1960s. As a composer, Black received support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Going down memory lane today...

This video takes me back to a very special night when I had the honor of bringing my good friend and fellow New Orleanian, Ledisi, to perform a tribute to Nina Simone with the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra.

Leddy was absolutely incredible that night (like she is every night) and completely brought the house down. Her artistry, soul, and connection to the music made for a performance none of us will ever forget.

We were also thrilled to record one of the songs from that concert for her Nina Simone project, and we were also fortunate to join her on several tour dates as well.

Moments like these remind me how blessed I've been to share the stage with such extraordinary artists and friends.

Thanks, Leddy. Much love and respect always. ❤️
