It’s been a minute but here’s a song for the Summertime blues that we are feeling here in New Orleans.

“Summertime “ has been sung by so many great talents, but something about Sam Cookes rendition captures the magic ( and torment) of the southern summers for me.
The song was written by George Gershwin, as part of the musical “Porgy and Bess” which was not supposed to be a musical at all! It was supposed to be his first opera!
I love opera but I’m happy he went with the jazz inspired musical instead . So many beautiful renditions from so many different artists came from that brilliant musical. I cry every time I hear Nina Simone singing “I Loves You Porgy”.

Harry Haag James was an American musician who is best known as a trumpet-playing band leader who led a big band from 1939 to 1946. He broke up his band for a short period in 1947 but shortly after he reorganized and was active again with his band from then until his death in 1983.
