Octavia Art Gallery was established in 2008 in New Orleans, LA. Please contact the gallery for more information.

The gallery was founded by owner Pamela Bryan, who is directly involved with organizations seeking to preserve the art, architecture, and culture of New Orleans. Similarly, the mission of Octavia Art Gallery is to showcase the work of national and international emerging and established contemporary artists along with modern masters, emphasizing the preservation and conservation of unique and authentic artistic cultures worldwide. The gallery also specializes in the resale of select works from 20th century artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Keith Haring, and Tom Wesselmann. Additionally, the gallery has fostered strong relationships with artists living in Cuba and continues to present significant exhibitions featuring Cuban and Cuban-American artists. Octavia Art Gallery assists in the cultivation, growth and enhancement of both new and established corporate and private art collections through art advising and collection management. Octavia Art Gallery has 3,000 square feet of space available for private party and event rentals.

Such a fun studio with artist James Henderson today!

Based in New Orleans, James Henderson’s work explores the concept of memory and the idea of ‘home’ as an emotional space, rather than a physical one. Utilizing found imagery and text as a starting point, Henderson collages and layers his mixed media paintings to create a rich background onto which he often adds the silhouette of a figure, an icon of a house, or colorful drawings of children or shapes. The inclusion of imagery from vintage dress patterns, children’s books, literature, and other items from the past become Henderson’s visual language through which to depict the notion of how one’s past experiences, emotions and personal archeology greatly shape one’s identity.

Octavia Art Gallery is pleased to present Points of Passage, featuring new works by Alia Ali. After eighteen months of near-continuous movement, migration, travel, and research between London, India, Java, Morocco, Helsinki, and beyond, New Orleans artist Alia Ali returns home with a practice transformed. Fellowships, residencies, commissions, and a major solo exhibition at Taidehalli Helsinki have afforded Ali something increasingly rare: sustained time for research, experimentation, and making.

Points of Passage asks what happens to an artist’s language when travel and time allow that language to expand. Ali returns to New Orleans not simply with new work, but with greater fluency and a larger vocabulary. The exhibition brings together three interconnected bodies of work, Homage, Batik, and a new in situ iteration of Woven Air, alongside talismanic objects, textiles, stones, and writings gathered and created throughout Ali’s travels. Long recognized for her photographic sculptures and immersive textile installations, Ali increasingly moves beyond the photographic image. Textile, language, light, air, and movement become materials in their own right. Together, the works carry questions of migration, inheritance, protection, memory, and belonging into new material territory. Running throughout Points of Passage is Sabyani, Ali’s invented writing system. Drawing from ancient Sabaic, Amharic, Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi, and historical textile ornamentation, Sabyani moves across cloth and object as both language and pattern. It exists somewhere between ancestral memory and an imagined future.

FINAL DAY!

Between Memory and Myth brings together the work of Brittany Fanning, Luke Forsyth, Bradley Kerl, and Ransome to examine how contemporary painting moves between lived experience and imaginative reconstruction. Rather than documenting the world as it is, each artist uses memory, observation, and personal or cultural history as material that is reshaped through the act of painting. Fanning and Forsyth draw from everyday environments, creating scenes that blur the line between direct observation and psychological narrative. Kerl combines references to memory, art history, and abstraction to explore how images change through time and perception, while Ransome layers collage and painting to connect cultural memory, ancestry, and collective histories. Together, these four practices reflect the exhibition’s central idea: the space between memory and myth, where experience is never fixed but continually edited, reinterpreted, and imagined. The exhibition considers painting not simply as a record of reality, but as a process through which meaning is constructed, revealing how personal and collective histories are shaped as much by imagination as by recollection.

Pierre Bergian expresses his fascination for architecture through his paintings by exploring space and structure, making use of the presence of architectural components. His current work depicts a selection of interiors from the pantheon of 20th century design, from Tony Duquette’s Dawnridge to Karl Lagerfeld’s Paris apartment. Bergian’s rooms convey a sense of breathing, pulsing characters, with their richness of personality fully rendered in the artist’s loose, impressionistic brushwork.

Bergian built his career painting primarily empty interiors and emphasizing their architecture and play of light, inviting the viewer to imagine their past and future lives. In contrast, in his present works Bergian depicts rooms as they were actually lived in. One has the unexpected chance to see him interpret the canon of classic furniture forms, whether tracing the curve of a Louis XV bergère or limning the lacquered folds of a Coromandel screen.

Bergian studied at the University of Ghent and has published writings on the topic of design and architecture. He has had solo exhibitions at Purdy Hicks, London; Gallery Laurent de Puybaudet, Paris; Galerie Josine Bokhoven, Amsterdam, and his work in included in the permanent collection at the British Museum in London.
