On this Juneteenth, I am honored to share a link to the audio of the New Orleans Slave Trade Marker and App tour. A group of historians (Erin Greenwald, Freddi Evans and Josh Rothman) and myself produced this in 2018 as part of the City of New Orleans Tricentennial. The app is meant to accompany the walking tour of (9) historic markers that we erected through the French Quarter, Marigny and Central Business District. It chronicles points of distinction and significant aspects of the domestic slave trade and its impact on the enslaved people in New Orleans. The app is free and can be downloaded at on iTunes or Google Play. Check it out: https://neworleansslavetradeapp.stqry.app/1/tour/11190/item

On Thursday, October 15, the CAC invites you to participate the first of our three online workshops about creating a Feminist Data Set! Through the work of artist Caroline Sinders, learn about how Artificial Intelligence (AI) are constructed and how we collect feminist data to create a more free and just technological future. The first workshop will focus on collecting feminist data, beginning with an introduction to machine learning, data, and design thinking.

You don't need to be a technologist, AI engineer, or a robot to participate: just have an open mind, curiosity, and a desire to resist data bias!

Admission is free and open to the public, but registration is required.Learn more and RSVP at cacno.org/feministdataset1 (link in our bio)!

This event is part of the CAC's online programming for “Make America What America Must Become,” An Exhibition of Gulf South Artists, on view at the CAC through January 24, 2021. Learn more at cacno.org.

"Rodney King" is a solo theatrical work by Roger Guenveur Smith that was inspired by the late Rodne King, whose videotaped beating by the LAPD sparked riots in 1991 and raised awareness about police brutality and systemic racism in this country.⁣

The work, presented live at the CAC in 2018, has recently been made available for streaming on Netflix. We encourage you to experience this incredibly powerful work entirely free, with no Netflix account required.

We also recommend that you check out a virtual discussion surrounding the work between its creator, Roger Guenveur Smith; Sarah Bellamy, Artistic Director of St. Paul's Penumbra Theatre; and Rohan Preston, lead theatre critic of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. ⁣

Bellamy, Preston, and Smith will discuss theatre as an essential public service, and its historic and contemporary response to civic crisis. Smith has a longstanding alliance with Twin Cities institutions which also includes the Guthrie Theatre, the Walker Arts Center, Macalester College, and the Eastside Freedom Library.⁣

Their full hour-long discussion is available on Alta Global Media's YouTube channel, or copy and paste this link: https://youtu.be/LdiNooznE6Y⁣
