Bayou Achukma for Bayou Paws Veterinary Hospital

Now, I may have gone a little overboard. There are 24 animals hidden throughout this mural 👀

A rougarou, pelican, heron, cardinal, bee, 3 cats, and 16 dogs all share this little bayou world where every creature belongs.

The title “Bayou Achukma” honors the Choctaw people and the Indigenous history of this land. Achukma carries the idea of peace, beauty, and harmony, which is something I wanted this mural to embody. A place where animals, people, water, and land are cared for together.

Bayou Vet in Mid City is a dream coming true for one of my favorite people: Dr, Johanna Ecke. She’s built this new clinic based on compassion for animals and their humans. This mural also holds personal stories: Dr. Jo and her partner Eric’s dogs, my Maybelle and Bauer, Allen’s Duckie, and a rougarou tribute to Allen’s heart dog Bbop, along with many others 🫶

Zoom in to see if you can spot them all. My favorites (besides my own)? Gigi the Persian cat judging all of us from the tree limb and Peaches the peachopotamus.

Meet Romeo 🩵 This is the third portrait I’ve had the honor of painting for Traci over the years. I don’t think I’ll ever stop feeling grateful when someone trusts me with their family again and again.

The first portrait I painted for Traci was way back in 2013 of Stewie, Lucy, and Bailee. It was a donation for an Animal Rescue New Orleans auction. Then came sweet Ponyboy in 2017, the honorary Shih Tzu imposter, and according to Traci, her soulmate dog. And now, Romeo has joined the collection.

Seeing all three portraits together honestly makes my heart so happy. These paintings become little time capsules. Theyi tell the story of the animals who shaped our lives, made us laugh, stole our socks, comforted us through hard days, and loved us unconditionally.

Thank you, Traci, for trusting me with your babies for more than a decade. It means more than you know!

So many of my portrait clients come back over the years to add another beloved family member to their collection. They tell me it’s because I captured the true spirit of their pet. That’s one of the greatest compliments I could ever receive 🥹
