A rather belated post to express our appreciation for our Crystal art witch sisters, Cristina .

Cristina recently returned from Santiago, Chile, where she attended the ACHS Heritage conference on behalf of the . 💖

Cristina presented our Forbidden Foods project as part of the panel ‘Nourish and Resist: Food and Feminism in Global Contemporary Art of the Caribbean’ led by the brilliant and she was co-presenting with and .

Our Forbidden Foods project took place in 2019 as a series of performative dinner parties, during which we served foods cited in mythical lore as being dangerous or forbidden.

It’s a joy for all of us to see our work and vision continue to be talked about, shared, and celebrated years later. Thank you to all of our supporters and thank you, dear Cristina, for representing! 😘

Sneak peek of something special we’ve been working on, along with the amazing SLU New Media and Animation students. 😍

We’ve been digging through the ’s archives for our latest project, “Unidentified Woman Musician”.

Taking inspiration from the unknown histories of underrepresented women musicians in the Jazz genre of music, The Crystal Efemmes and SLU New Media and Animation Students utilized the New Orleans Jazz Museum’s Visual Archive to create a stop-motion animation video installation featuring women Jazz musicians of the 20th century. While sourcing imagery, a number of photographs were discovered that labeled women musicians as “unidentified”. The Crystal Efemmes aim to work with the community to identify and centralize these women in the Jazz History canon.

This video is premiering during “Sound Collage: A Celebration of Music and Light”, the Jazz Museum’s annual festival featuring musicians, performances, and video installations.

The event will be open to the public Friday Dec 3rd from 7-9pm, and there is a ticketed Gala Saturday, Dec 4th from 7-11pm.

Perhaps we’ll see you there, dear ones!

🎙 We recently had the pleasure of chatting with Liz Williams from the Southern Food & Beverage Museum here in New Orleans.

It was a delight to recall our latest exhibition, The Fall, and the Forbidden Foods Dinner series we created in preparation for the show.

You can listen in by heading to Apple podcasts - simply search for ‘Tip of the Tongue’ (what a tasty name, eh?) 👅

Thank you to Liz for inviting us on the show! We look forward to more delectable discussions in the future... 😉

Happy International Women’s Day from the Crystal Efemmes! 💎💙💎

We’ve been rather quiet and mysterious lately over here on the ‘gram.

But that doesn’t mean we haven’t been busy.

It won’t be long until we concoct another creative scheme to dismantle the patriarchy and promote abundance and harmony amongst all living things.

You know, the usual.

And perhaps, perhaps… something wickedly wonderful is already in the works…

’Til it’s time to tell you more, we’ll leave you with one of our favourite moments from The Fall.

Blessings to you and yours, today and everyday.

This November’s we’re remembering the grand opening of ‘The Fall’. 🐍💎🔴🌿

It’s hard to believe it’s been an entire year since our vision was finally unveiled in all its mystical glory.

The four of us are forever grateful to the many, many, many souls who supported and believed in this project.

We’re now looking into 2021 with hopeful hearts, and we can’t wait to share our next creative venture with you all.

‘Til then, our darlings, we’re sending you all the cosmic light and love and energy of the Scorpio new moon! 🌚

We’re excited to welcome y’all to The Front tomorrow for the opening of ‘No justice, no peace’, curated by Leslie-Claire Spillman and featuring the talents of local New Orleans artists Abdul Aziz, Prosper Jones, and Ashley Lorraine.

Plus we’ve invited special guest Bernard Pearce to project his poem, ‘Where You Stand’ through the gallery window in Room 1. This stunning addition to the show will be visible after dark, so be sure to swing by St. Claude to take a peek for yourself.

The gallery is open to visitors 12-5pm both Saturday and Sunday. We look forward to seeing you!

The Crystal Efemmes are excited to welcome Leslie-Claire Spillman with her latest curation project, ’no justice, no peace’ in Room 1 of The Front, opening this Saturday June 13th.

Deep gratitude goes out to Leslie-Claire Spillman for curating this photo show so quickly, and to the featured artists - Abdul Aziz, Prosper Jones, and Ashley Lorraine - for sharing your work with all of us.

We’re also thrilled to welcome Bernard Pearce, with his projection installation, which will be on view every evening after dusk.

Opening up the space to allow us all to share, learn, reflect, and evolve together feels paramount right now. The challenging and necessary conversations that are taking place at the moment need to continue. We hope, through art and community, to facilitate and encourage such conversations in whatever way we can.

PROSPER JONES
ASHLEY LORRAINE

Curated by Leslie-Claire Spillman.

ABDUL AZIZ

Abdul Aziz is a freelance photojournalist, filmmaker, and serial entrepreneur. For nearly two decades, he has worked to document conflict, war, social issues and culture spanning the globe from the Middle East and Africa to the far reaches of the Himalayas. His photos have been published by opinion leading news agencies worldwide. Most recently his work has focused on the rise of white nationalism in the United States and the removal of Confederate monuments in cities at the center of the debate, such as New Orleans and Charlottesville.

PRO$PER JONE$

Pro$per Jone$ is an emerging artist, rapper, and producer born and raised in Uptown New Orleans. ART ABOVE THE LAW.

ASHLEY LORRAINE

A graduate of McDonough 35 and Xavier University in New Orleans, Ashley Lorraine is a graphic artist and photographer who is the owner of Creative Vibe Graphics and Ashley Lorraine Photography. Lorraine has worked for Cumulus Broadcasting and Signs Now where her visual art in signs, billboards and logos were seen all over New Orleans including the Louis Armstrong Airport.

Her "Black Men in America" series is a body of work that depicts the experiences of Black Men in America by utilizing a seemingly universal symbol, the American Flag. While other races can proudly pledge allegiance to the United States of America, the perennial struggle continues as black men seek to assume their rightful place in humanity. Black Men In America showcases “How Black Men Feel” –which is never much of a concern given the often tainted, oversaturated images of black males in the media. “Black Men in America” is a reminder of the black man’s contribution to an unforgiving and unapologetic society.

LESLIE-CLAIRE SPILLMAN

A graduate in art from Xavier University with a focus in painting and photography, Leslie-Claire Spillman has worked as a gallerist and professional photographer in New Orleans for over 16 years. The longtime Director of Soren Christensen Gallery, Spillman has curated hundreds of shows for the space, including 10 years of exhibition offerings in participation with the annual PhotoNOLA festival, for which she has also worked as a portfolio reviewer. Her photography has been featured in print and group exhibitions, and she has work in the permanent collection of the New Orleans Museum of Art. She works exclusively in portraiture, but is moved by a wide variety of work and seeks to continue connecting artists with exhibition opportunities through her independent curation.

BERNARD PEARCE

Bernard Pearce is a Louisiana native. He attended St. John’s College in Santa Fe, New Mexico where he studied the classics. He returned to Louisiana to pursue a life focused on the arts. Pearce has been active in theatre for 30 years. He has released two full length recordings of his original music and he has recently published two collections of poems, photos, and visual artworks entitled, “The Deed to My Bones” and “General Studies”. In 2005, Pearce participated in an 8 month long residency sponsored by the Andy Warhol Foundation and organised by The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council in New York City. Over the years he has become increasingly more interested in opera as an art form, as it combines many different aspects of an array of creative disciplines. His interest led him to attend several performances of the Santa Fe and Metropolitan Operas, and eventually to join the Caravan Stage Company, where for four years he studied all aspects of producing modern opera.
