GEORGE DUNBAR
ENVISIONING ABSTRACTION 1950s–2023

RECEPTION
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3 | 6–9 PM
ART FOR ARTS’ SAKE DOWNTOWN

Callan Contemporary is pleased to present George Dunbar: Envisioning Abstraction 1950s–2023, an exhibition spanning more than seven decades of the artist’s sustained and evolving exploration of abstraction.

Bringing together painting, collage, sculpture, clay, and precious metal leaf works, the exhibition traces a remarkable career defined by continual experimentation with gesture, structure, material, light, and color.

From the energy of his early action paintings and collages to the refined geometry and richly tactile surfaces of his later work, Dunbar continually expanded the possibilities of abstraction—balancing spontaneity and order, accident and intention, and organic form and geometry.

Drawn from the artist’s private collection and the Estate of George B. Dunbar, the exhibition brings together works spanning the extraordinary breadth of his career.

Please join us at Callan Contemporary for the opening reception during Art for Arts’ Sake in celebration of the visual arts.

On view through October 31, 2026

Today, on what would have been George Dunbar’s 99th birthday, we honor his life, his extraordinary artistic legacy, and the remarkable body of work he created over more than seven decades.

In celebration of his enduring contribution to American abstraction, Callan Contemporary is honored to announce a new exhibition of Dunbar’s work
Dunbar: Envisioning Abstraction 1950s–2023
Exhibition dates:
September 24th - October 31st. 2026
Reception: Saturday, October 3rd, 6-9

Drawn from the artist’s private collection, the exhibition brings together works spanning Dunbar’s career, including pieces that have rarely been seen publicly and have never before been offered for sale. From the gestural paintings and collages of the 1950s to his later explorations of geometry, texture, clay, and precious metal leaf, the exhibition reflects an artist whose curiosity and commitment to abstraction remained constant throughout his life.

MITCHELL LONAS
THE LIGHT WITHIN
AUGUST 1 – SEPTEMBER 15, 2026

This dynamic relationship between object and observer positions Lonas within a broader lineage of artists concerned with perception and material presence. Yet his practice remains distinctly his own, distinguished by an exceptional command of process and an insistence on craftsmanship. In an era defined by acceleration and distraction, Mitchell Lonas offers an alternative: an invitation to pause, to observe carefully, and to discover that what changes before our eyes may also awaken something enduring within us.

Come preview the works in person at Callan Contemporary, Tuesday-Saturday 10am-5pm. For all sales inquiries, please email [email protected].

MITCHELL LONAS
THE LIGHT WITHIN
AUGUST 1 – SEPTEMBER 15, 2026
The title, The Light Within, suggests that illumination is not something encountered externally alone, but something cultivated through experience, reflection, and endurance. At the center of The Light Within is the recognition that life is seldom defined by moments of certainty, but by continual movement. Lonas understands transformation not as an isolated event but as an enduring condition. Every season leaves its mark; every passage alters the landscape from which the next emerges. The exhibition reflects Lonas’ ongoing interest in the rhythms that govern the natural world and the ways those rhythms find resonance within human experience.
Visit the gallery Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-5pm or by appointment. For all inquiries, please email [email protected].

Callan Contemporary is pleased to announce a new exhibition of paintings by
Mitchell Lonas opening on August 1st 6-9 pm during Fidelity Bank White Linen Night
For more than a decade, Lonas has developed a practice that occupies a compelling space between painting, sculpture, and optical experience. Working with painted aluminum, he meticulously engraves thousands of linear incisions into the surface. Rather than depicting light, the works receive and activate it, making perception itself an essential component of the work.

BRADLEY SABIN
MAY 1 – JUNE 30, 2026

On view now at the gallery.

Sabin’s practice is grounded in a meticulous hand-built process in which each ceramic element is individually hand formed and assembled into expansive compositions. Through cycles of firing and glazing, he develops layered surface treatments that yield nuanced variations in color, depth, and finish. This approach balances precision with organic growth, as discrete forms coalesce into structures that feel both deliberate and emergent.

“There’s a vibrational aspect to the work, a feeling of movement. I create connections and a sort of tonal landscape in which they sit. For me that’s the most important part of the painting.” - James Kennedy
