The New Orleans Fringe celebrates and thanks the organizers, artists, community members and audience who have made the seven years of the New Orleans Fringe a unique time for fearless audience and fearless performers.

After consulting our board, key Fringe coordinators and members of the community, we passed the torch to Faux/Real because we recognized that the theater environment had changed, and it was time for a new festival...and a new festival needed a new name.

Recently, a different group has announced that it is "relaunching Fringe" as a spring festival and is misrepresenting themselves as the New Orleans Fringe.

That group has no connection with us, nor does it have authorization to use our Louisiana trademark "Fringe" to promote a theater festival.

We welcome another theater festival in New Orleans. It's a great idea. However, that group cannot use New Orleans Fringe, Nola Fringe, Fringe, etc.

There are several good reasons. First they will cause confusion with audience and performers. In fact, we have already heard from a number of artists and community members who are confused and they think we are relaunching Fringe.

Misrepresenting themselves by using our trademark also means that they are saddling their new effort with the expectations that it will be just like the New Orleans Fringe. That is a recipe for failure.

But most importantly, a creative city deserves creativity. We suggest that they get creative and pick a new name that will energize their effort and make it their own.

In recent years, as attendance has grown, there has been steady pressure from fans and performers to lengthen the festival.

"The city’s issues with the Marigny Opera House may well have been legitimate, but it’s the speed and alacrity with which they shut the venue down which is truly impressive. We can conclude that when somebody else’s property is deemed to be unsafe, the full weight of the city may be brought to bear. On the other hand, when the city’s own property, you can absolutely hear those crickets chirping."

Home sweet home!
