Two hundred years ago today, Charlotte Cushman was born in Boston, MA. In 1835 she came to New Orleans as an opera singer. Turning to acting she rose to become America's first native born tragedienne, The first woman to serve as a manager of a professional theatre company, she directed the Walnut St.Theatre in Philadelphia. By the mid-19th century she was considered one the most famous women in the English-speaking world!

Countdown to Charlotte Cushman's 200th birthday continues!

Pictured is F***y Kemble, the great 19th c. actress, member of the Kemble family of English actors, niece of the famous Sarah Siddons - and friend of Charlotte. Fannie came to live in Philadelphia on an estate near Broad and Olney where a park still exists honoring as an abolitionist. This portrait, showing F***y as Beatrice, was painted by renowned Philadelphia portraitist Thomas Sully, as was the portrait of Charlotte featured in our last post.
