Louisiana pine snakes are one of the rarest snakes in North America, and on June 3, Audubon Zoo’s Herpetology team released 14 of them into Kisatchie National Forest as part of the Louisiana Pine Snake Recovery Program - a collaborative conservation effort. 🐍

Audubon Zoo has worked with this species for more than 30 years and has supported its conservation almost as long. To date, 58 Louisiana pine snakes raised at the Zoo have been released back into the wild, helping strengthen wild populations.

Even while the Zoo’s Reptile building is closed for renovations, important conservation work continues behind the scenes. The Herpetology team maintains a breeding colony of 21 adults, with offspring raised for nearly a year before release. This “head start” helps improve their chances of survival by reducing vulnerability to predators.

Louisiana pine snakes are a key part of the longleaf pine ecosystem, especially through their connection to pocket gophers, their primary prey. Protecting this species also helps support the health of this unique habitat and the wildlife that depends on it.

We’re proud to continue supporting this important recovery work and to see these snakes making their way back home to Louisiana’s forests!
