Twenty years ago today, I drove out of New Orleans to evacuate for Hurricane Katrina, having no idea I wouldn't move back for ten years. I lost a lot, but many others lost much more. However, I gained great love, lifelong friendships, and a new career. I am thankful to be back home in New Orleans twenty years later. Pic: 2005; Out on my beloved screened-in porch at the corner of Cherokee and Maple. The roof blew off, and the screens blew out in the storm.

So much pretty here.

Currently, I am reading "Low April Sun" by Constance Squires, set in Oklahoma City in 1995 and 2015. I love everything she's written and highly recommend this book. I remember waking up in Norman, Oklahoma, on April 19th, 1995, and discovering that the Federal building had been bombed. I spent that day driving around OKC, delivering goods from my dad's Lovelight bakery. It was an awful and surreal day. Squires does an amazing job exploring this event respectfully and bringing her reader right back to that moment and place in time.

On the morning of April 19, 1995, Delaney Travis steps into the Social Security office in Oklahoma City to obtain an ID for her new job. Moments later, an explosion shatters the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building into rubble. Her boyfriend Keith and half-sister Edie are left to assume the worst—th....

A beautiful overcast Sunday morning in the park. As I walked by, the farmers' market was opening up, and an aerobics class was bouncing around under the peristyle. So much good in this city.

Historical evidence from the first time I fell in love with New Orleans, March 1985. For our 7th-grade spring break, my parents drove my best friend and me the twelve hours from Norman, Oklahoma, to New Orleans. We bought all the touristy things, took all the touristy photos, and forced my poor parents to walk up and down Bourbon Street (at least 5 feet behind us) over and over as we took in the sights.

I haven't been painting a lot this year, but I have been taking long, beautiful morning walks in City Park, working on my house, and writing a lot. In New Orleans, inspiration is always around me.
