***ORLANDO, by Sarah Ruhl, adapted from the novel by Virginia Woolf, directed by Maggie Tonra - starring Kalimah Williams as Orlando

“An adaptation of the ‘’longest and most charming love letter in literature’’ written by Virginia Woolf for her lover Vita Sackville-West, ORLANDO is a theatrical, wild, fantastical trip through space, time, and gender.” *

November 13, preview at 7:30pm
November 14 & 15 at 7:30pm
November 16, matinee at 2pm
November 19 - 22 at 7:30pm.

ORLANDO is a fantastical, romantic romp spanning three centuries. Coming of age, intimacy, the pursuit of true love, gender, and beyond, ORLANDO queries “appropriate” relationships through the ages, unveiling the commonality of normie concepts of gender.

A sexual awakening with The Queen, to the confines of choosing an appropriate wife. Distracted by passion he follows Sasha the Russian, only to be abandoned and heartbroken. After a wildly indulgent trip to Constantinople and a century and half later Orlando returns to us as a woman! She ponders her gender transformation: What might she have lost and gained due to her new gender identity? Mostly considering the clothing restrictions, she glibly weighs society’s expectations.

Director Maggie Tonra utilizes all the theatrical fun stuff to carry us through centuries of love and desire. With the unmasked layering and moving around of design elements and sound sources, the audience witnesses a deconstruction and reconstruction of space, time, and story. A chorus of physical theatre actors, with shadow puppets, rotating props, and found object sound effects played live on stage, they carry us through the narrative prose and story line.

Must see!

Seeking Asylum
Written by Mari Kornhauserand directed by Reese Johanson is an immersive one-act, two-character play starring Kathy Randels and Jyna Roots, costumes by Dana Marie Embre, stage manager, Amani Veals

A climate change exploration, it takes place in a speculative world of 2040 in what once was the United States. Based on the original 29 questions immigrants filled out on the ships’ manifests in the early 20th Century and then used in interviews at Points of Entry, the play explores how citizenship is not guaranteed. No one is immune. It can happen to anyone, even people in power. One minute they’re in, the next, they’re out, and so are you as the political borders of nations change.
