This. ⚜️🪭🪭🪭

New Orleans has a Mardi Gras krewe built entirely around science fiction, founded for what its members call the disenfranchised and generally weird. 🚀

The Krewe of Chewbacchus started in the fall of 2010, put together by three friends, Ryan Ballard, Kirah Haubrich, and Brett Powers. Instead of the traditional Uptown route down St. Charles Avenue, they parade downriver through the streets below Elysian Fields. There are no motorized floats either, just hand-built contraptions that members push and pull themselves, loaded with throws they made by hand.

It's part of a much bigger Marigny and Bywater tradition of small, do-it-yourself subkrewes that grew up alongside the older, grander Uptown krewes, carving out space in Carnival for satire, fandom, and homemade weirdness right next to a century of Rex and Bacchus.

Would you rather ride in a motorized Uptown float or push a homemade contraption through the Marigny?
