Today we honor the strength, resilience and triumph of a people who never gave up on freedom. Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when the last enslaved African-Americans in Galveston, Texas were finally informed of their freedom two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Let us remember.
Let us reflect.
Let us all honor and celebrate freedom for all.

One of the most intriguing chapters in Michelle Gagliano’s new book, “Cultivating the Sublime,” is entitled “The Alchemy of Sustainable Painting: My Secret Recipes.” Michelle shares her personal approach to sustainability in her practice:

“My sustainable approach goes beyond revisiting Renaissance paint recipes. It includes reusing materials from my immediate surroundings, such as soil, plants, and other natural elements, to create a palette profoundly connected to the world around me.”

“These recipes are the result of years of trial, experimentation and research. I know that artists are often told not to share their secret formulas, but the cause I am serving is bigger than any individual secret. My hope is that this recipe section inspires artists to align their practice with their ecological values.”

“I am perpetually fascinated by art history; bowing to all those who have come before. Currently, my obsession is Raphael and his working palette and thus, creating work based on the master’s palette. I circle around pigments that he used from ultramarine, lead tin yellow, carmine, vermillion, madder lake, verdi gris, ochres, Brazilian lake, metallic gold, metallic bismuth to more colors from the earth. Exploring the light reflecting quality of the pigments, they speak of the past transcending time to be re-created on surfaces that echo the Renaissance madonnas, the bright colors on the cathedral ceilings to the transposition of Mother Nature and the awareness of the environment.”

Aaron Reichert is a portrait artist with a passion for capturing the essence of his subjects. He is inspired by old photos, movies, TV, sports and political personalities, literary and artistic subjects. Reichert’s black-and-white paintings capture the essence of his subject in grayscale and exude a captivating intensity. Utilizing a pallet knife, he intuitively crafts dynamic portraits, shaping an environment of abstract energy that seems to pulsate beneath the skin of each subject.

From childhood, Aaron Reichert had been fascinated by hazy, black and white Civil War photographs, particularly those of Abraham Lincoln, a figure of considerable loneness. Reichert’s faces and figures are hewn with pallet knife out of passages of black and white.

Working without a detailed plan, he paints intuitively, shaping an environment of energy seemingly below the skin of the subject. From a distance, we see a dramatic figure; from close up, we confront a spontaneous orchestration of particles bursting from the canvas.

Like many other notable portraitists — Van Gogh, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, and Richard Avedon — Reichert has created a technique that gets beneath the surface of his subjects and revitalizes the art form.

Appreciating the high tradition of corporality and light exemplified by Rembrandt, Titian, Odd Nerdrum, Andrew Wyeth and Lucian Freud, Eddy Stevens employs a style that is both modern and timeless. His earlier exhibitions in Holland, Belgium, France and the United States (yes, New Orleans), were rich with color. His new work has evolved toward the monochromatic, using occasional colored details to capture attention, and his painting has reached new levels of clarity and power. Less, in this case, is more.
