August is my incubation time. My “work season” ends in July cause the heat rises way up. I could go out to sell paintings in the square, and sometimes do still during this time if the conditions ease up, but mostly I become a hermit.

In my hermitage I very intentionally take time to be still. I spend so much of my year out in the street chaos. When I am able to have a few weeks off from giving to the public I can really hear myself, my desires, my needs, more clearly.

I invest time and energy into stretching my fibers, moving my body in slow, gentle ways. Letting my defenses and aggression soften and relax. Let the habits I’ve become accustomed to melt away.

I’ll often do some buisness development course at this time. Something that can help me build past what I can see at the moment.

This year it was a personal branding class with a heavy emphasis on storytelling. I needed something to ratchet my jaw open and get me to carve out the time needed to make writing happen.

Time spent writing is time spent in stillness so it’s a practical habit to build during my downtime. I’m hoping this new devotion can remain a touchstone to calmer times when the whirlwind of work kicks up again.

My writing is working too. I have a newsletter brewing with an overview of my vision about my artwork and its place in the world.

For now, longer writing will manifest on Substack.
