An old and sappy little poem

Been thinking a lot about what a cliche I am and trying to lean into it. ✌️

Not idea even where this poem came from but it’s here. I just know I’ve always been sadder in the Summer.

I genuinely think one of the worst things artists deal with is the expectation that every thought has to be completely singular and unprecedented to matter.

Meanwhile, half my personality is just things I’ve overheard in passing, books I underlined too aggressively in college, and song lyrics that swirl on an infinite loop in my brain. So much of me—so much of my art—is made up of things I simply *wish* I had written. Things I resonate with so much I’d get them tattooed all over my body.

Anyway. Long live artistic recycling. Long live collage. Long live all the magpie poets who treat their writing like nest construction.

I want to see what scraps you’ve stockpiled away and how you’ve made them into something new.

Recently I made a post about making your poems weirder, andddd a lot of you were into it. So, I decided to build a workshop around it.

The Almanac presents….
Stranger Than Poetry: Writing Toward Weirdness & Whimsy.

We’re going to spend some time with poems that lean a little off—talk about where that line is between strange and nonsense, and why the things we second-guess are usually the most interesting parts. Then, we’ll write some weird little goblin poems 👹

Welcome to my attempt at writing a poem loosely inspired by every song on ’s The Great Divide. This one was written while listening to on repeat. Somehow it ended up heavily referencing another song entirely? Idk man. I’m sure I’ll write another End of August inspired poem at some point. Stay tuned for more 😅

You may have heard: I’m building something for NaPoWriMo next April, and I don’t want to guess my way through it.

So I made a short survey to figure out what actually helps, what gets in the way, and what would make something like this feel worth your time (and money).

Whether you wrote all 30 days, a handful of poems, or didn’t participate at all—I want to hear from you.

Everyone who fills it out will be entered to win a signed copy of Sudden Seances. Survey stays open through May!

Link’s in bio. I’d really appreciate you taking a few minutes with it.
