Four moms will be .consious (St Claude 2 minutes past canal) Saturday 6pm-9pm to say a few words about their fights for justice, standing next to large portraits of their sons painted by Walta Focq. Also, Peers Art Exchange will be in the courtyard with food, live music, and art for sale.

This show, featured on the cover of Laigniappe Magazine, includes installations and several large multimedia paintings using a variety of materials and methods including blow-torched ceiling tiles, drywall mud extruded through polyester, silk, laser etching, carved drywall, work tarps, bike stands, spray paint, stencils, and chalkboard paint. This show.is about bringing awareness to these Louisian stories, but also about trying to imagine the unimaginable: losing a child to unpunished racist police violence.

The Back Story -  Focq met Mona Hardin, the mother of Ronald Greene, in 2021 when she visited New Orleans to see her street art piece about the killing of her son (that street art piece is reproduced in this show). Mona had read about the art in an Advocate article written by Doug MacCash. Over the years the two became close friends and collaborated on various projects including this show. Focq went on to do other street art with Casa Bean and with Foster, who he met through Mona.

Deaughn Willis, 25, was shot and killed by an East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s deputy on January 8, 2022, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, after authorities had mistaken him for his twin brother during a kidnapping investigation. When officers knocked, they encountered Deaughn Willis who police claim pointed a gun at them.  They fired, striking and killing Deaughn who family say was already on the other side of the door. Family members present insist he did not have a weapon and explain that they answered fearing it was an intruder since officers did not clearly announce themselves.

Trinelle Willis, Deaughn’s mother and a licensed nurse, desperately tried to save her son's life as he lay bleeding on the floor. However officers ordered her and the rest of the family to evacuate the apartment with their hands up while her son was still breathing. She was handcuffed and put in the police car. Approximately 45 minutes passed after the shooting before an ambulance or emergency medical services were allowed to reach Deaughn. Doorbell camera video was released that showed multiple deputies approaching the door without identifying themselves, but it did not provide a clear view of the moment the shooting occurred.The deputy who fired the shot, identified as Eno Guillot, was allowed to return to work, which sparked protests.

Ronald Greene: Shortly after midnight on May 10, 2019, State Trooper Dakota DeMoss attempted to pull over Ronald Greene, a 49-year-old African-American barber, for an unspecified traffic violation near Monroe, Louisiana. Greene did not stop, and troopers chased him. When Greene finally did stop, DeMoss and Master Trooper Chris Hollingsworth rushed to Greene's vehicle as Greene, unarmed, said repeatedly, "OK, OK. I'm sorry" and appeared to raise his hands. Within seconds, Hollingsworth shot Greene with a stun gun through the driver's window while commanding Greene to get out of the car. Video discovered later shows officers repeatedly choking, beating, tasering, and pepper spraying the handcuffed Greene as he pleaded for his life. Though in critical distress, the officers left Greene unattended for 9 minutes, shackled and prone to suffocate, while they cleaned the blood off their hands. “I beat the ever-living f**k out of him,” one officer said on tape. Greene died in transit to the hospital. 

For two years, Louisiana State Police leaders told Mona Hardin that her son had died in a car crash. The local coroner ruled the death accidental, even though Greene was severely beaten, taser barbs remained in Greene’s  body, and the car was barely damaged. However, in 2021 the truth began to surface. The Associated Press discovered bodycam video showing the murder, which police had denied existed, and whistle blower Carl Cavalier revealed internal documents exposing lies told by the officers and by their superiors. Based on the new information a federal investigation was launched. A medical examiner re-ruled the death a homicide, however the officers were barely punished. Officer DeMoss received a “letter of counseling” for violating the “rules of courtesy”, while officer York was suspended without pay 50 hours for turning his body camera off and for dragging Greene by the feet. The others went unpunished, although whistleblower Cavalier was fired for “disloyalty”.

On May 2, 2013 BRPD narcotics detectives executed a no-knock  search warrant at Dontrunner Robinson’s Flag Street home. Police reports admit to a "violent struggle" during which Sgt. Drew White used his elbow, knee, and hands to restrain Robinson. Family note that Sgt White already carried a personal grievance with Robinson prior to the incident. Photos from the scene later showed blood pooled on the floors and smeared on the walls. 

Officers claimed Robinson swallowed a bag of crack co***ne as they entered. Blood was the only obstruction later noted by attending paramedics. Robinson reportedly became unresponsive after being handcuffed. The autopsy cited asphyxiation, but it also noted heavy bruising and cuts on Robinson's head, neck, and chest. A hospital officer later described him as appearing "severely beaten" with his eyes swollen shut. Witnesses saw an officer strike Robinson in the back of the head with a gun before dragging him back inside the house. 

Robinson’s wife, Alaysha Alexander Robinson, was in the bedroom when Baton Rouge Police narcotics detectives kicked down the door. She was later handcuffed and moved to the living room, where she witnessed the physical assault. She described the scene as "horrific," testifying that officers hit Robinson with a long gun. As Robinson struggled to breathe—which Alexander described as him "flailing around like a fish out of water"—she pleaded with officers to help him, but she says they ignored her. After being separated from him, she heard Robinson desperately calling out for his mother. 

In 2021, whistleblower and former officer Jeremiah Ardoin revealed that narcotics detectives referred to the incident as the "Flag Street Massacre" and joked that Sgt. White had beaten Robinson to death. Ardoin, the whistleblower and only black officer in the narcotics division, was later fired. Police seized and allegedly deleted footage from a home surveillance hard drive. Private investigators recovered some of this data in early 2022.

Our opening was a big success. By all accounts it was a sad, beautiful, and inspiring mothers day eve. If you missed it we have another on saturday May 23. This one will have the art market, music and food and the moms will be there telling their stories again next to the portraits of their sons.

Lynching never ended, it just changed forms. Four Lost Sons" is an art show for the moms to have their say about it, alongside art about their sons by Walta Focq It includes installations and several large multimedia paintings using a variety of materials and methods including blow-torched ceiling tiles, drywall mud extruded through polyester, silk, laser etching, carved drywall, and fake bike stands.

If you missed the opening last night we have another one saturday 2 weeks from yesterday. That one will have the art market, music and food and probably all the moms again.

Thanks to all who braved the weather to come out last night. By all accounts it was a sad, beautiful, and inspiring mothers day eve. If you liked it please tell friends about the next opening.
