The Rouss Theater and Center for the Arts is looking forward to reopening soon. Theaters in Virginia have been given permission by the governor to open on June 15, with limited seating of 100. (We need not worry about that.) We spent much of last summer making improvements to the building; including installing ceiling fans and getting a medical grade air filter to keep any virus from spreading.
When the pandemic closed us down in March 2020, we had just begun production on a comedy thriller called “Burying the Hatchetts” by Ryan Garrity, published by Heuer Publishing, but since then, the cast has gone off in different directions. We are hoping to get many of them back, but that still leaves us with openings for auditions. We will have open auditions for all parts and adjusts as needed.
We will need 5 women (we need one teenager, but the rest of the women can range from 20 to 50) and 3 men (the script says in their 30’s but a good actor can act any age – same with the women.) If you are interested, please email us at [email protected]. Do not call, as the phones were turned off due to the pandemic and aren’t turned back on, yet. A date for the auditions hasn’t been set, but it will be this month. AND Tech People – we need sound and lights and backstage help as well. The set was built last summer, so that is not a worry.
There are a few more production ideas coming up as well – so keep watch for these messages. Tell your friends about us and even if you do not want to participate in a production, please come out and see what we are doing to keep live theater in New Market and the Shenandoah Valley.

Thank you!

Hope everyone is staying home and staying safe. Meanwhile, things are getting exciting over here at the Rouss, stay tuned for upcoming posts & updates!!!

We may be shuttered from business but two busy people are gathering at the theatre to social distance paint a set!

We will see you all when we can open the doors once again!

IMPORTANT UPDATE:
As the pandemic continues to impact all businesses in the Shenandoah Valley, please remember that non-profit theatres typically run on shoestring budgets. Often this means funding from one show covers overhead & show production costs for the next show.
Please donate now - every little bit - from $1 up - helps! We know that given the financial climate, all of us are anxious. Theatre and Art are important factors in helping societies deal with that anxiety. We look forward to our ability to entertain you all soon! Help us cover our most basic costs until that time!
Thank you.

Important Update:
In accordance with guidance provided by the Virginia Department of Health and out of concern for our patron's health, The Rouss Theatre and Center for the Arts' production of "Laughing Wild" will be postponed until further notice. We continue to value and appreciate your support and will provide updates as deemed necessary.

1st Weekend Run Reviews of August Wilson's FENCES:

- " I implore everyone who has not seen it, to head to the rouss next weekend to catch "fences", presented by selah theatre project...this cast is brilliant in telling this unforgettable story...please support the arts in the valley!"

- "GM!! J you were absolutely correct your performance was spectacular. Is there by any chance a video? If so should be sent to Tyler Perry...no joke...just fact. If there is not I think it's an injustice. Cause y'all are good for"big" stage. Just saying!!!

- "...you were great, almost to good to be truthful, I was a little weirded out by how I know you as this quiet guy, but on stage your jumping around and stuff but it was cool. I was also taken back by Jake's reaction he really enjoyed it and liked Corey's character. He also asked me why Troy said the "N" word so much which opened up a dicey conversation for me but I think I did okay.
Also to the lady who played Rose what a talented woman, she had me in tears."

- "A great group of actors!
If you did not catch this show last year at Selah you MUST catch it this year. It is brilliantly performed by this cast. You will come away breathless."

- "Saw this play last night for the second time for both its content and the powerful performances by its cast. Go, if you have the opportunity."

Last run at The Rouss Theatre and Center for the Arts this Friday & Saturday @ 7pm and Sunday @ 3pm. Purchase tickets @ www.selahtheatreproject.org/tickets or at the door. See you there!

Another hilarious mystery from the Rouss. If you are not interested in acting yourself, please pass this message to friends and family that are.
Synopsis of the play: Aspiring performer Daphne Prescott and her faithful maid and companion, Greta Gump, are stranded on a deserted road in the English countryside. The ladies soon find themselves guests of the cursed Hatchett House, a creepy old manor with a peculiar history and even more peculiar inhabitants. Lord Esmond Hatchett seems to be highly sensitive to light and noise and deep in mourning for his late wife, while the rest of the family has morbid quirks of their own. Daphne may be in for more than she bargained for in this delightfully comedic thriller reminiscent of the classic 1960’s horror film.
We need 5 females ages 17 to 50 and 3 males - 2 in their 30's and 1 40+. Also need some carpenters to help build the set.
Performance dates are tentatively set for the 2 middle weekends of April, but if we get started we can open the first weekend. Auditions are Saturday and Sunday, January 25 & 26 at 3PM. You can preview the 1st Act at https://www.hitplays.com/default.aspx?pg=sd&st=BURYING+THE+HATCHETTS&p=262
and download the Script Preview.
(If you cannot make these dates, please email [email protected] to schedule an alternate audition date - we can always work with you.)
