LA MARISS: POETICS OF REPAIR
An exhibition by Ixel Orozco

Join us at Expressiones Cultural Center on Friday, October 23, as we celebrate the work of Mexican artist Ixel Orozco and the conclusion of her two-month artist residency in New London.

Since arriving from Guadalajara in late August, Ixel has spent her time exploring New London and the surrounding communities, collecting natural and discarded materials, meeting local artists, and transforming her discoveries into sculptures and installations.

Her work brings together found objects, plant fibers, wood, and everyday materials to explore our relationship with the environment, memory, and the places we inhabit.

During her residency, Ixel has also worked with fourth-grade students at the Regional Multicultural Magnet School, introducing them to art projects that encourage creativity, environmental awareness, and the reuse of materials.

At the center of her exhibition is La Mariss, a large-scale puppet inspired by the sea, alongside a collection of smaller sculptural works created during her stay. Together, these pieces invite us to reconsider objects we often overlook or discard and discover new possibilities in them.

We invite our friends, neighbors, artists, and the entire New London community to join us, meet Ixel, see her work, and celebrate the conclusion of her residency at Expressiones.

Art, Creativity, and Cultural Connections!
Expressiones AIR from Mexico Ixel Orozco, currently an artist-in-residence at Expressiones Cultural Center, has been working with fourth-grade students at Regional Multicultural Magnet School (RMMS) in New London, bringing art, environmental awareness, and Mexican cultural traditions into the classroom.

Inspired by Día de Mu***os (Day of the Dead) and the creative possibilities of recycled materials, students are exploring how everyday objects can become works of art. Using cardboard, paper, wooden sticks, fibers, and other simple materials, they are creating colorful animals, imaginative figures, and three-dimensional constructions.

Along the way, the children are learning to think creatively, solve problems, work with their hands, and see the possibilities in materials that might otherwise be discarded. They are also discovering how art can connect them with other cultures and traditions.

What makes this experience especially valuable is the opportunity to work directly with a practicing artist from Mexico, exchanging ideas, experimenting with materials, and developing confidence in their own creativity.

At Expressiones, we believe that bringing artists into schools gives children opportunities to learn through making, exploring, and discovering.

Today, Expressiones was honored to participate in the Partners Event at Mystic Congregational Church in Mystic, Connecticut. We were grateful for the opportunity to share our mission, connect with community members, and talk about how Expressiones works to foster education, cultural exchange, creativity, and belonging throughout our community.
A heartfelt thank you to Mystic Congregational Church for bringing together so many organizations dedicated to service, compassion, and community impact. It was inspiring to stand alongside fellow partners, learn about each other's work, and celebrate the power of collaboration.
We are thankful to everyone who stopped by our table, asked questions, shared stories, and showed interest in our programs. Together, we continue building bridges, creating opportunities for learning, and strengthening the communities we serve.

What an inspiring day at Expressiones during the New London Art Stroll 2026!
Visitors stopped by throughout the day and were captivated by the creative process of our current Artist in Residence, Ixel Orozco, as they worked on the construction of a giant puppet. It was truly exciting to witness the dynamic exchange between artist and audience. Questions were asked, ideas were shared, and the curiosity on people's faces reflected the wonder of seeing art come to life in real time.
We were also honored to welcome State Representative Anthony Noland, who visited Expressiones and experienced firsthand the creativity and community engagement taking place through this unique project.
Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the Art Stroll such a meaningful celebration of creativity, learning, and cultural connection.

Join us for a special hands-on workshop with artist Indira Urrutia at Expressiones Cultural Center.
As the Art Stroll comes to an end, Indira returns to Expressiones at 3:00 PM to guide participants through wire knitting and the traditional Mexican looping technique. Her work brings together handwork, material exploration, and contemporary art in a beautiful and accessible way.
No previous experience is necessary, just come ready to explore, create and learn something new.
