Located just off I-95, Exit 83, the Lyman Allyn Art Museum has enjoyed celebrating the arts with visitors for almost a century. The Museum presents a stimulating mix of changing exhibitions, in addition to our permanent installations that celebrate American art and history, and Louis Comfort Tiffany’s close connection to the area. In 2025 the Museum plans to open Lyman Allyn Park, an urban park th

at will serve as a cultural and educational resource for the City of New London and surrounding region. Although construction may temporarily limit access to the grounds, the Museum will remain open during its regular hours throughout this period.

📣New Leadership. A New Season.

The Lyman Allyn is delighted to announce the appointment of Frank H. Goodyear, Ph.D., as its next Director!

A nationally recognized museum leader, curator, scholar, and author, Goodyear most recently served as Co-Director of the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, where he and his co-director, Anne Collins Goodyear, led the institution for 13 years.

Goodyear will begin his tenure at the Lyman Allyn on October 26, succeeding Sam Quigley, who announced his retirement earlier this year following 12 years of transformative leadership at the Museum.

“I am thrilled to be joining the Lyman Allyn at such an exciting moment in its history,” said Frank H. Goodyear. “The Museum has an extraordinary collection, a remarkable history, a dedicated staff and board, and a growing relationship with the community. I am especially excited by the opportunity to build on all that the Museum has accomplished thus far, while leading the Lyman Allyn into its next chapter.”

Summer has flown by and so has our time hosting “FACING THE GIANT: THREE DECADES OF DISSENT.”

Drawn from work created by Shepard Fairey between 1989 – 2019, this exhibition features a curated selection of 30 hand-painted multiples – prints on unique collaged backgrounds with additional stenciling and embellishments – as well as two additional Fairey prints from the Lyman Allyn’s own collection.

The exhibition closes on Sunday, September 6, so plan your visit now!

This is your final week to participate in our Summer Reading Bingo!

Free First Saturday on September 6 is the last day to bring in your Bingo card and choose a small prize for each straight-line BINGO you’ve achieved. While you’re here, stop in the art studio between 11 am – 1pm to create your own artwork inspired by Howard McCalebb and the Golden Ratio.

Mark your calendars for a special gallery talk with artist Howard McCalebb on Thursday September 10th.

Over a long and productive career in sculpture, artist Howard McCalebb (American, b. 1947) has been inspired by the myriad shapes and forms that emerge from the matrix of the Golden Ratio. This exhibition features a selection of the artist’s small and mid-size sculptures, drawings, paintings, and collages.

“Love is like a butterfly, a rare and gentle thing” 🦋 Today we honor and commemorate the life of Dolly Parton(1946-2026), who was truly rare and gentle.

Parton wrote a song called “Love Is Like a Butterfly” in 1974, which went to No. 1 on the country charts. Since then a butterfly has become a part of her emblem and brand. Parton, stated that as a child she used to chase them around while growing up in the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee. Over the years Parton’s affinity with butterflies remained as she grew to intensify with their beauty and gentle nature.

Through her music and philanthropic efforts Parton has radiated sunshine into the world. In her memory, take a moment and think, what would Dolly do?

Happy Stuffie Sunday! 🧸 Today is the day to bring in your favorite stuffed friend along for a museum adventure. Visitors of all ages are invited to explore the galleries side-by-side with their cuddly friends!

Be sure to stop by the Art Studio between 1 – 3 pm to create a portrait of your stuffie – a special keepsake from your day together.

Don’t forget to strike a pose! 📸Share your favorite photos of your museum outing with your stuffed sidekick for a chance to be featured on our social media later this week.

Our First Thursday program revs up again on September 3! Grab your friends and join us for evening hours and drop-in artmaking on the first Thursday of every month. Enjoy discounted admission while exploring the galleries and getting creative.

Guests of all ages are invited to our monthly evening art night (5 - 7:30 pm) led by a member of the Learning & Engagement Department. Each activity is inspired by a different exhibition, theme or artwork. Art supplies are provided. No registration is required. Stop by our art table for five minutes or two hours and bring something home! See below for dates and project themes.

Looking for a hands-on art workshop for your homeschoolers? 🎨 Our monthly Homeschool Workshop returns in September. On the third Tuesday of the month, students aged 5 -12 are welcome to join us from 1 - 3:30 pm for an afternoon of art education and creativity.

We’re kicking off our fall program on Sept. 15 with a class inspired by our exhibition on artist Howard McCalebb, whose work focuses on the matrix of the Golden Ratio. Homeschoolers will create 2D and 3D works, focusing on proportion and primary colors.
