Thomas Adkins Landscape and Marine Artist
Thames River Gallery is pleased to present the work of Contemporary Realist artist, Thomas Adkins. Adkins is a spectacular landscape and marine artist that divides his time between his Southbury, CT, and Bristol, ME studios. A graduate of Paier College of Art, New Haven along with graduate classes at the School of Visual Arts in NY, his work graces many residences and corporate settings alike.

Adkins states, “My paintings spring from a lifelong fascination with the outdoors. This fascination, present even in my earliest memories, has greatly influenced my personal, academic and professional pursuits, and most significantly, my artwork. “The moods, mystery, and atmosphere along with inherent design of nature intrigue me, and I seek to unveil and express those qualities in my paintings, trying to document a specific place and time. What I am looking for is very elusive, that play of light and form along with design, a frozen moment in time. My goal is to share that special time and place. Hoping that the viewer will feel the same emotions that I do.”

She breathes life into figures, both human and animal, to whisper and sometimes shout the stories that reside within them.

What’s New and Interesting at Thames River Gallery?

“The Clam Digger” by Dutch Artist Johan Fredrik Cornelis Scherrewitz, 1868-1951
Oil on Canvas, Framed 25 1/4 x 33 1/4 x 2 in.

Johan Scherrewitz was a Dutch painter associated with the Hague School. He inherited his artistic talent from his French mother, who was related to painter Antoine Renou. He began studying art with a drawing teacher in Velsen, Netherlands, and later trained with Dutch landscape painter Geo Poggenbeek. His landscapes often feature shepherds, sheep, horses, cows, farmers, fishermen, boats, and carts. In addition to painting his native Amsterdam, Scherrewitz traveled to France and Germany. Many of his paintings were exported to England, where he exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1907, in Liverpool in 1909, and at the Scottish Academy in 1916.

Please enjoy this reel of Canton, CT artist, Mark Woodcox painting Ole Glory II. The original Ole Glory was painted along with his art students back in 2012.
"It was unfortunately destroyed some years back, but I decided to paint it again after having a request to have it hung in Thames River Gallery where these good folks are representing my artwork" said Woodcox.
It will be on display along with his other works at TRG starting in July commemorating the 250 Anniversary of the United States.
The paintings focal point is the twisted stripes which is representing the struggles our Republic faces as well as the founding fathers' ideas that all are created equal. Mark looks forward to when that idea is realized.

Happy Flag Day!
Flag Day, celebrated annually on June 14, commemorates the day in 1777 when the Second Continental Congress officially adopted the "Stars and Stripes" as the national flag of the United States. Since 1916, when President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation establishing a national Flag Day on June 14, Americans have commemorated the adoption of the Stars and Stripes in many ways–displaying the flag in the front of their homes, parades, and other patriotic observances. National Flag Day was signed into law by President Harry Truman in 1949; According to legend, in 1776, George Washington commissioned Philadelphia seamstress Betsy Ross to create a flag for the new nation. Happy Flag Day! 🇺🇸

Please mark your calendar for the excitement at Thames River Gallery on Saturday, July 11th! Our 70 ft. tent is brimming with activities from 10am-6pm, such as live entertainment and a special opportunity to admire and pet fuzzy four-legged creatures. Waterford Country School is generously bringing your favorite small animals that you can cuddle and enjoy while you listen to Ken Atkins and the H***y Tonk Kind Band. The band gets things going at 2pm and stays until 5pm. The Waterford Country School is sponsored by New London County Historical Society and the Custom House Maritime Museum.
The fun under the tent continues with games for the family, and unique woodturning and woodcarving demonstrations. New England Woodcarvers, Robin Patten, and Kimberly Rhault will show their specialized skills, and they are joined by our experienced woodcarvers, Ray Johnson, and Hillaire Cote, from Mystic Woodcarvers. Eastern CT Woodturners is represented by wood artist Dianne Bronk.

We will have an opening to our latest and greatest exhibit: “Art as Seen Through the Lens and the Brush”. This spectacular exhibition will feature renowned photographers and local artist standouts in oil and watercolor. A demonstration by celebrated artist, Sheila Barbone, will cap off a truly memorable day celebrating New London.
Make this day the centerpiece of your celebration of America 250 and your summer calendar!

"Wally Seagull", the Gallery mascot, invites you to join us today, May 2nd, starting at 10:00 AM. Our current exhibit, "Her Voyage Continues," will feature demonstrations from 4 of our female artists - Bethany Browne, Catherine Gibson, Cara Forgione, and Jacqueline Phillips, as well as a book signing by Pat Procko.
We are also excited to participate in New London in Bloom, a glorious event created and coordinated by our very own Kira Seamon. Thanks, Kira, for enhancing the beauty of our amazing city.
