Bleeding in Black & White

Bleeding in Black & White "Bleeding in Black & White" is a new play by Bucks County playwright Rick Goodwin that runs 7/14 through 7/17 at the Phillips' Mill Theatre in New Hope.

At the beginning of "Bleeding in Black & White," it is the spring of 1999, and a piece of a failed satellite has crashed through the roof of the Kayle home in rural Pennsylvania. As a result of this freak accident, Michael Kayle—an HIV-positive hemophiliac who lives with his mother, grandmother and sister—meets a man who may be his salvation; but only if he can reckon with a past tragedy that stil

l haunts him. His struggle to move forward and embrace the possibility of allowing himself to love once again reopens old wounds that could tear the whole family apart. Combining reality with dreams and memory, and featuring the manifestation of the plague doctor Nostradamus, "Bleeding in Black & White" deals with the acceptance of unspeakable grief and the healing power of family and love. (Please note that there is mature language and content in the play.)

Meet Nostradamus, the stuff of nightmares and a frequent visitor in the dreams of Michael Kayle. Not only did Nostradamus make predictions of the future, he was also a very famous 16th century plague doctor. And in Michael's tortured psyche, Nostradamus represents the past tragedy from which he can't escape. And in Bleeding in Black & White -- opening in only 5 days! -- the role of Nostradamus is played by the brilliant Righteous Jolly. His performance alone is worth the price of admission! Susan Schwirck plays the feisty 88-year-old F-bomb -dropping grandmother Dotty Thorn in the upcoming play "Bleeding in Black & White" at Phillips' Mill, July 14 - 17. During rehearsal one evening recently, we videoed the characters in the Kayle Household as they might have appeared on a local news channel after the incident where a chunk of a failed satellite crashed through the roof of their home. Here's Dotty in her usual sharp-tongued form.

The banner went up at Phillips' Mill today. Less than 3 weeks until we open "Bleeding in Black & White," which one Bucks County theatre aficionado called "the must-see play this summer." Come opening night (July 14) and you can meet the cast at a wine reception after the show. I promise you it will be exceptional theatre and damn good wine!

MEET THE CAST: Brandon Buoscio as Mark Kayle, the 14-year-old son of Caroline Kayle. A hemophiliac dealing with AIDS, Mark displays wisdom beyond his years. In many ways he is like his uncle, Jimmy Kayle, who died of AIDS years before...he is outgoing, inquisitive, and someone who embraces life, even as it is slipping away.

Mark: “Greatgran doesn’t believe in God either. She told me she has enough to think about in this world without worrying whether or not there’ll be a next. Are you afraid of dying?”

MEET THE CAST: Jimmy Meyer as David. A young man who met Michael Kayle at college back in the early 80's. It was at that point that his fate was sealed.

David: “Please, take my pillow and push it over my face -- hard. Hold it down and push hard until I stop breathing. And then go find the person who did this to me, and send him to hell so he’ll know what this feels like.”

MEET THE CAST: Griffan Arbogast as Jimmy Kayle. Jimmy was Michael's younger brother, a hemophiliac who died of AIDS in his late teens. In describing his brother, Michael says, "Everyone
wanted to be his friend. He was gonna go places and do great things." Even at the end of his life, Jimmy maintains an upbeat demeanor, even though he knows he is doomed.

Jimmy: “When you do the painting, do it in color. None of that black and white s**t you like. I want to be remembered as someone who embraced life right up until the end. I want big, bright colors.”

MEET THE CAST: Steve Young as Simeon Coakley. Simeon hosts a nationally televised cable show called "Faces Behind the Headlines." His television audience is dwarfed by the size of his ego, and he even thinks he has a shot at replacing Dan Rather on the evening news when Dan retires (remember, the play takes place in 1999). He is a wine snob and a womanizer, and if you ask him, he will tell you that he is the best-looking and smartest person in the room. Caroline has no problem feeding his ego; in fact, she has no problem with a lot of things.

Simeon: (addressing Caroline Kayle) “You’ve had some significant publicity, and you’ll definitely get more after your segment airs on my show. You’re very photogenic, by the way.”
