Local Lit at Lotta Greater New Haven literature, to share!

11/27/2019

Literary minds of New Haven rejoice!

Our next event is only a week away

Local Lit at LOTTA would like to thank all of our applicants for their submissions. This December 3rd we are honored to present works from Shelley Stoehr and Lary Bloom!

Bring a friend and buckle in for Stoehr's third time on our stage, sharing the magical realism story "Wings."

If you're looking for something for that special bibliophile in your life, we're also running our first Local Lit Book sale! You'll find books from event facilitator Rebekah L. Fraser and other authors who have read here, so bring your Christmas lists and get something fresh.

Also in our program this coming Tuesday, recipient of the Connecticut Center for the Book's lifetime achievement award, Lary Bloom will read his story, "The Warehouse of Good Intentions: a memoir of war and remembrance."

Come on out to 911 Whalley Avenue at 7pm on this Tuesday, December 3rd!

You won't want to miss it!

ATTENTION, NEW HAVEN AREA AUTHORS!

If you are writing PROSE - whether short fiction, short memoir, or short creative nonfiction - we at Local Lit @ LOTTA would love to hear from you. We accept pieces that have been published as well as pieces that are still works-in-progress.
Please READ OUR SUBMISSION GUIDELINES (they are very specific) at www.locallitatlotta.com/submit/ before sending us your work, though. We cannot consider any piece that does not meet our guidelines.
Why? Because we have a mission and a promise to serve New Haven area prose authors and a mission and a promise to our audience to be consistent in the type of work we present.
Examples of what we will not consider, ever, no matter what:
*Poetry,
*Stories over 6,000 words,
*graphic violence or s*x,
*gratuitous violence or s*x,
*Stories presented in a format that does not meet our very specific guidelines (which we created to make the editorial process simpler, since we're all volunteers with limited
time.

Don't have anything ready to share that's new? We love to discuss previously published stories.
Even if it's already seen print, a published story is still alive.

It can be hard to get feedback on something when you publish, depending on the platform, but here at Local Lit at Lotta we get the rare treat of open discussion on the themes and techniques in your story with a curious and diverse crowd of literary minds.

Congratulations to the writers of the three stories coming up at the next Local Lit at Lotta!!

MICHAEL W. TENNEY is currently an MFA candidate in creative writing at Southern Connecticut State University. Tenney teaches children how to read and write, and shares wisdom with young people about the terrific dinosaurs that once inhabited this planet. He will present his short work of fiction: "Brown Dragon."

ROBERT WECHSLER is a long-time resident of North Haven. He is Publisher of Catbird Press and author of books including "Performing Without a Stage: The Art of Literary Translation," "Local Government Ethics Programs," and the novel "Sandra Ives, Thomas Ives." He is also the translator (from the Czech) of Alexandr Kliment's book "Living Parallel." His piece, "Taxed," will be read by event founder and facilitator Rebekah Fraser.

LISA GAUDIO currently lives in New Haven, CT. She is pursuing her MFA in fiction writing at Southern CT State University. Her work has been published in the Hartford Courant and Helix Magazine, and in 2015 she represented Central CT State University as a poet in the CT Poetry Circuit. She will read, "Babe," a nonfiction piece about an awakening.

Submissions are open on a rolling basis and we're really excited to share time this upcoming Tuesday. Please join us for food, (non-)fiction, and friendly banter at 7pm on August 6th!

Please join us in congratulating the two wonderful writers who will be reading their work at our next event:

MICHAIL MULVEY, an adjunct instructor of American literature, holds an MFA in creative writing and has had short stories published in literary magazines and journals in the US, the UK, and Ireland. His work has appeared in such publications as Johnny America, Scholars and Rogues, Prole, The Front Porch Review, Poydras, The Summerset Review, Roadside Fiction, The Umbrella Factory, Crack the Spine, Literary Orphans, and War, Literature and the Arts. He will be reading a work entitled “Tess is Her Name,” which paints a portrait of an efficiency and its inhabitants.

CAROLYN LUSCH is a writer, bicyclist, urbanist, mother, and longtime Michigander who moved to New Haven two years ago. Before pursuing urban planning she wrote for The Michigan Daily and Groundcover News, and is an enthusiastic participant in local writing groups wherever she finds them. Carolyn will be reading her piece “Alexandria’s Baby,” about a woman’s complicated entanglement with a famous writer.

Thank you to everyone who submitted - we had some great stories this session and we very much look forward to reading more. Hope to see you at 7:00p on June 4th for our next reading!
